Smile Converting from column shift to console shift

I would like to convert from column shift to a console shift in a 1971-1972 cutlass. Is it a matter of changing the shift linkage on the transmission, buying a different steering column and, the console and bucket seats? Does anyone know the procedure to do this?

check with Brian Trick (507OLDS), Scott (Oldspackrat), or any of the other folks on here that part out cars. They can get you everything you need and advise how to make the swap. (Different speedometer required, wiring harness, etc...) Good luck with the swap. (I have parts on the way from Brian)

Pretty much, yes. Be aware that for the 1971-later model years, the neutral safety/backup light switch was on the column even for floor shift cars. The backdrive linkage that locked the floor shifter with the key was also used to activate the NSS.

Help on the conversion

Hello all, I know this is a very old thread but I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my questions. I bought my 72 442 (no build sheet to verify) a couple of weeks ago. It has the Strato buckets and Dual-gate shifter. The column was in bad shape and was a column shift. Can someone explain more about the last reply about the 71 and later having the nss and backup switch on the column and how that should be set up to work properly with the Dual-gate. I just bought a floor shift column. Any help would be greatly helpful. Thanks.

The feds required the shifter to lock with the key starting in 1969. GM figured out that the same linkage that locked the shifter would also operate the NSS on the column.

Much appreciated for the information. Would the back drive linkage kit be everything that is needed for it to function properly? Year One has it.

Yes, but FYI, except for the bracket on the trans the parts are exactly the same as the column shift linkage.

That is good to know except that when the previous owner converted it to floor shift they discarded all of the linkage and related parts.

Back drive linkage

You can get all of the back drive parts from Inline Tube. I have attached a screenshot of their catalog page.

My point is that any column shift A-body parts car is a donor, likely for pennies as compared to buying new repro parts.

Would headers create clearance issues for this linkage? I have a set of Hooker headers on a 72 Cutlass with a 455 and I rotate my column by hand to turn on the reverse lights. But would love being able to lock the trans in park while I step away from the vehicle.

I have Hooker headers (442 convertible, console car) with no problems but mine is a small block, BBO might be different.
