Been working on Project Olds-Camino. Got the front end rebuilt, got the rearend rebuilt, interior gutted and ready for a through cleaning, new tires, starting to look like a car again.

This weeks project has been bending and flaring new brake lines. We relocated the proportioning valve for header clearance. Nick now knows how to flare brake lines. I took great pleasure in deliberately “forgetting” the fitting as he flared the tube. Better on a scrap piece of line than on the car!!

This weeks lesson brought up a question I couldn’t answer. We painstakingly removed the “spring” from the old crusty lines to transfer to the new line. My son asked why the spring is on the line. Protection? Vibration? GM didn’t spend a penny more than needed building these cars, so if the spring wrap wasn’t necessary it wouldn’t be there.

Just curious.

 

If you're referring to the spring located on the exterior of a brake line it's considered an armor wrapping generally placed in areas where a brake line (or any type line) might experience abrasion &/or wear - if we're talking about the same thing.

The "spring" armor is actually to prevent damage from stones kicked up by the tires. I get coils of it from The Stop Shop.

The section of brake line we were working on that brought up the discussion was across the engine crossmember. I figure that’s pretty protected.

 

Agree "TheStopShop" site is awesome. I should likely bookmark it, as well; but, it most likely will get lost among my myriad of several hundred bookmarks. Hopefully, I'll remember it - has a nice clever name, I like.
