breather element

Need a breather element for my 64 cutlass, 330 -4 bbl. Checked Year One catalog but they don't specify the element to the year of the car. I need all the parts from valve cover to air filter...can you let me know what I need or send a pic? Thanks!

Your car could have had an open or closed PCV system depending on where it was sold new.

Open system, as it implies, uses a breather that is open to atmosphere. It allows fresh air from underhood and any blowby that comes back thru the breather vents off to atmosphere.

A closed system (California-only in those years) has a tube from breather to air filter housing so that the fresh air intake comes from inside the aircleaner, and any blowby from the system will get sucked back thru the aircleaner and carb and reburned in the engine.

The closed system parts are not easy to find 50 years later, though I think they could come from any 64-67 Olds V8 with 4-barrel and closed PCV, which again are California-only.

If you're not concerned with 100% original appearance, you can adapt a valvecover breather and connector tube from a 68-90 Olds V8.

Thanks for your help, the car was made in California so your response was a big help and gives me the direction I need to go. The previous owner tried to "jerry-rig" it, I want the engine to look factory. Thanks!
