Another Carb Problem

Hi all, not been on for a while so I apologise for that.

I converted my '63 88 394ci from a 2bbl to 4bbl carb and always found that under heavy throttle it would run out of gas so I finally got round to taking the carb apart only to find that the floats were too low leaving only 1/4" of fuel in the float bowls. After ajustment I took the car for a test run, stopped on a quiet straight piece of road and floored it, no problems, straight upto 80mph with no hesitation at all. Boy was I happy, and it has been fine ever since.

Now for the problem, I was driving around today no problem and after visiting a friend I fired the car up to show off as you do (he has only got a V6) no problem, mucking about he put his foot ovver one of the pipes and blocked it for about 10 seconds, as I don't have a balance pipe could this have done any damage because I pulled away strongly but the first time I stopped at a juction the car stalled and all the way home when I stopped at a junction it would run real rough and stall. Now it will not idle at all and runs really rough, it is a pig to start and will only keep running if you keep the revs up.

Any help would be gratefully received thanks

Aris

If it was only 10 seconds I wouldn't think so. Sounds like it has dirt in the card or a bad fuel filter.

Make sure your fuel filter is clean. You should also make sure your carburetor is tight on the intake manifold. You might have a vacuum leak.

It had a new fuel filter a couple of weeks ago. I took the top off the carb today, plenty of fuel inside. I will check for air leaks tomorrow.

Got it sorted now... fitted an Edelbrock performer. As soon as I started it up it was so smooth, spent a couple of hours making an adaptor for the linkage and now it starts, idles, runs, has plenty of power and the box changes as it should. Happy days!!!

So you replaced a Qjet with a new Edelbrock? Great!

Sometimes that is all it takes. The Q-jet is a good carburetor, but can be very frustrating if it is old and requires a rebuild.
