My weapon of choice is a condiment bottle (available at craft stores, etc) with a few inches of clear tubing on the nipple. Put a wad of paper towels down around the pump in any potential spill fallout area, stick the tube in the hole and gently squeeze, repeat until full. Cycle the roof and add fluid as necessary, when done, stick the plug back in.

If you need to add fluid, unless you were just working on it, you have a leak. Mine was leaking at the left cylinder and going down making a mess under the seat/ door panel, etc.

Great idea on the squirt bottles. I'll have to check that out.

Do you know the type of ATF for a 70?

(I've seen a YouTube video recommending ATF Dextron III or Mercon V for 2002 Mustang.)
