Based on your description of the issue, I can say with all confidence, its broke...

In order for anyone to give you further help you need to troubleshoot and answer Patricks question to narrow it down a bit. Is it fuel or spark?

Do you hear the fuel pump hum when you move the key to the run position? Plus, you can take coil packs to any auto parts stores and have them tested.

Spray some starter fluid in the throttle body... If it starts you will definitely know it is fuel related... If it doesn't start, move on to electrical system...

Since you need the engine running to create vacuum, don't see how that could prevent the engine from at least starting... If it would start and then stall, I could see a possible vacuum problem...

I do not think I would listen to your friend, but I am sure he has good intentions.

have your friend try starting it while you listen at fuel tank filler with cap off. If he bumps the starter you should hear the pump for a short period when the key is on.
