75 88 blower resistor part # help

well looks like this is not my week for the fleet...

A/C compressor self destructed yesterday on the Custom Cruiser, so I took the 88 to work this a.m. and forgot I had an unfinished project with it's A/C as well.

Last month or so the blower stopped blowing on fan speed 3.

I bought what I thought would fix it, a resistor, NOS from a 77 Chev.

Close but no cigar.

I need the part # for the correct part in order to find the right resistor.

Anyone?

Are you absolutely certain the problem is not with the high speed fan relay?

I am sure because the high speed works... I have 1 2 and 4. I even know it is not the fuse (now a breaker) near the distributor, that is for high and high works. I really think it is the resistor. Oh, and I did get a resistor that was close but speeds 2 and 3 while working, were reversed.

Try this one from the 1976 parts manual: Grp 8.855 p/n 3998401 B,C,E w/ AC.

The 1974 parts book shows the same p/n for 1974 B,C,E w/AC as well as 1971-73 manual control AC except F85, under grp. 9.275. You have several junkyard years to pick from if you can't find an NOS. Don't discount finding one on a B,C,E body Buick.

I think I'd look close at connections while I was in there. Or was the resistor toasted when you pulled it out?

thanks, funny thing is the resistor that came out looked PERFECT! I think I convinced my mechanic to look at it, he thinks he can make the one I got work. I got this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...%3AIT&viewitem=

NOS 73-77 CHEVELLE A/C BLOWER RESISTOR 1973 1974 1977 Genuine NOS (NEW OLD STOCK) GM #487392

speeds 2 and 3 are reversed and it glows red hot but he thinks he can make it work, the plug is the same

That number shows up as 73-76 all A-body in my Olds books. The blower motor part # is different between A and B-C-E car. Not sure how that would affect the resistor, but I don't think it should glow red hot. I expect you'd smell that inside the car.

Resistor IS located in the airflow path in the case, so that will have some cooling effect on it.

well I guessed and I was wrong, and I found the # you gave me at oldbuickparts.com and they have NOS so it is on the way and all should be good... thanks a million, I need a parts book!

of course I guess I could have borrowed it out of Joe's car but that's just not right

now with the Custom Cruiser getting a compressor this week, all cars should be back to normal A/C wise

this is exhausting!

I have parts books covering 1974-earlier and the 1976 model year, so if you need something just ask. Also have 1962 and 1964 body parts catalogs and a 1965 chassis book. I don't mind looking things up, just remember some of these numbers may be obsolete or superseded. That's what we're in this hobby for, is to help keep each others' old rusty junk on the road! (and **** off the anti-old-car faction while we're at it!)

Are you keeping the Cruiser on R12? In Florida, I'm sure someone has figured out a way to successfully convert a VIR system to R134a, but my experience is they don't really like the new refrigerant.

Thanks a million. yes, all 3 little pigs have been converted to 134A, all have had surgery to elimintate VIR and all have had their recirc doors wired shut. Just doing my part to be green LOL

thanks again for the number, made all the difference.
