71 Cutlass A/C part ID and location help

Can anyone tell me what this is, what it does, and where it is supposed to be located?
It appears to be some type of temp control POT. I've never seen anything like it under a hood on an A/C system. It seems out of place to me. Also compressor wiring is incomplete.

That is an aftermarket controller for an electric fan and is not a factory part. The non-GM electrical connectors should be a clue.

Makes sense, there not any electric fans on this car so that never really came to mind.
