69 cutlass core support/fan shroud mounting.

Can anyone post some detailed pics of exactly how the lower part of the fan shroud mounts, and some detailed pics of what the shroud mounts look like on the core support? I have never been real happy with the way my shroud fits, it was never centered very well on the fan, clearance was always tight at the bottom, and the shroud was a little further from the radiator than I felt it should be. I bought the shroud from a swap meet years ago, for all I know it may not be the correct part. I plan to order a replacement shroud, I have modified my core support in an attempt to improve the fit. I found a lower part of the core support from another parts car, that core support looks nothing like mine. I modified the top plate and lower radiator saddles with parts from a Olds 98 with the big radiator, I drilled the original spot welds out and installed the donor saddles in the same location, is there a difference in the position between cars with a 3 core and 4 core radiator? I’m using a Be-Cool radiator. Spring is right around the corner, I’m anxious to do some Oldsmobiling this summer

Hi Matt
Here's some photos of a loose core support that has the shroud brackets on it. I'll add another post with a picture or two of the core support mounted in a car. Let me know if there's any other views or close-ups that will help. John

I'll

OK, it looks like the shroud has a piece that's at a 45 degree angle that fits tight up against the bracket.

Both the loose core support and the one in the car are for 4 row radiators. Let me know if you need any measurements of anything. John

A two or three row rad doesn't use the brackets, only four row. With a three row rad (or two) the shroud fits on the inside of the cradle. Don't over tighten.

So would the bolt use the half moon notch of the core support for the 2 or 3 row radiators? Or did those core supports have something else for the bolt to go through? I'm pretty sure I've got a 1969 core support that doesn't have the brackets. If its different I can take photos of that one for Matt too.

I'm loosing daylight so I ran out and snapped a few photos just in case. Matt, this might explain why your second core support piece looked different than the one you already had in your car. Since your radiator is aftermarket, you might need to take some measurements and decide which mounting setup would work best for you.

Ok, my core support looks more like the second set of photos. I’m guessing that’s why I could never get the shroud to fit. Are those 4 core shroud brackets being reproduced? If not, anyone in readerland have a core support with severe collision damage, or long term visits from the “tin worms” who wouldn’t mind cutting that piece out and selling for a template? Always something. One upgrade leads to countless other minor headaches and hurdles to overcome.

So that pic with the round hole where your fingers are, is where the shroud bolt goes through. The half moon notch is for a bolt that might be too long. It also seems that a rad cradle for a four row rad was modified to accept the extension bracket for the four row rad. A '68 cradle doesn't have that area cut out where the bracket is welded in.

Matt, you might try a new thread in the parts wanted section. The members here with lots of parts may not have read this thread. Your welcome to use the photos shared here to explain what your looking for.

But also reading through what Yellowstatue posted. Are you sure you need the tabs? Do you have the correct shroud yet? If the radiator is aftermarket the shroud may or may not fit using the round holes in the core support and putting the shroud inside the core support lip.

I’ll get the shroud and the correct top plate and see what I have to work with. I’m to the point in my life I don’t really want to have to modify things to make them fit if the factory parts are available. I have no problem fabricating parts of nothing is available from the factory or reproduced. Why reinvent the wheel? Thanks for the pictures

Are any of you selling those 69 core supports?

Looks like several of those pictures are of loose parts not on the car. I am looking for a complete core support for a '69 442. My hood latch (front center reinforcement) is good, but the bottom rail and battery tray area are toast. Any of you have one for sale?

MI68442W30, I am in NC, moved here from MI in 2017 and have a lot of friends and family in MI that we drive up to visit fairly regularly I can likely have someone pick it up from you or pick it up myself. What part of MI are you in and could you send price and pictures? Randy

Randy, I am just north of Grand Rapids. what made you move to NC? if you came to pick the radiator support up I would likely give it to you for next to nothing. I don't have a 69 anymore and likely won't get another ,I am just keeping my 68's unless I find a 69 or 70 w-31 to restore after I finish the 68 I'm doing.

MI68442W30, I was born in Kalamazoo, grew up in Rockford, lived in GR for a little while, then moved back to Rockford from 2005 until 2017, when I had a work opportunity down here in NC. I had travelled back and forth to NC on occasion for about 10 years, then finally convinced my family that the weather and opportunity was worth the move down here. If auto parts are still considered essential in MI, I can get someone to pick that part up soon. Could you email me your address and a picture of the part? My email is randallp26@gmail.com.

Thanks, Randy
