68/69 Dual Snorkel Questions

So what is the difference between the 1968 and 1969 dual snorkel air cleaners?
Will the 68 fit under my stock 1968 442 hood with my performer Intake?

Thanks
Tom

Among the features unique to the 1968 model year is the PCV system. For this year only, they used a Chevy type filter in the air cleaner, LH side, fitting into a SQUARE hole and retained with a C or U shaped springy clip. Because it's a generic Chevy part, your dealer can still supply this filter. A short pc of hose similar to heater hose connects that filter's nipple to a 2-bend tube of dia. 5/8 or so, which resides in a special 5/8 hole grommet in the LH rocker cover. There are, furthermore, TWO types of these 2-bend tubes. PCV is in the std grommet in the RH cover.

So: '68 has SQUARE hole in **LH** side of air cleaner base.

1969-on, the PCV valve is placed in the LH RACover, with the common PCV grommet. The filter is the bulbous black steel canister mounted on the RH RACover, using the familar and easy to find 63/64" hole plain D shaped grommet. From that filter via a 90 degree rubber elbow, the passage is via a ONE-bend 5/8 steel tube [one of at least 3 different lengths], to a longer 90 degree [or even Z-formed, you might call it] rubber elbow which resides in the ROUND hole in the RH SIDE of the 1969 type air cleaner base.

So: '69 uses ROUND hole in **RH** side.

FUSICK's is probably a great place to buy grommets. If you can get a real GM one, do that, even if they are kind of expensive.

I have a performer intake and Edel carb with the dual snorkel. There is just barely enough clearance without the hood blanket. If you have a hood blanket you will need to remove it or cut out the area above the cleaner. The fiberglass will come in contact with the cleaner and literally destroy the finish in no time.

You might have clearance issues with anything other then the carb mentioned above.

Hope this helps.

If I remember correctly (& Octania can correct me if I'm wrong) the angle between the snorkles on the 68 and 69 are slightly different too. (edit: after researching a little I don't think there's any difference in the angle)

Like Nilsson said, if that's a stock air cleaner on a performer then it rubs. I'm guessing it's either not a Performer or the top of the intake has been milled slightly.

I'm running a Holley but the height is similar if not the same as the q-jet and I have exactly the same condition that Nilsson described. I do not have an OAI air cleaner but I'm guessing the filter is the same height

BTW, here's a quote from ROP that Octania wrote in 2005 regarding the offset between snouts for a 68:

No protractor on hand, so, measured from center of lid to center of end of each snout.

Lid to each snout = 14"
Snout to snout [center end] = 24.7
Simple triangle from there. sin^-1[12.35/14] ~= 61.9 ~=62 degrees, so the entire angle is 2x that or 124 degrees.
I actually found the original post that quote came from too:
