68 442 Air Cleaner

Is the 68 442 air cleaner specific to 68. I have 2 painted black but not sure of the car they came from. Does any one have a picture of one , or know were I can get one.

yes, the 68's have a square hole on driver side and should be red/orange
and coded OG on the back

There are different lengths of snorkels and the 442 is short and wide. Before you buy another one it would be good to find the correct measurements. I know there's several old threads discussing this. When you have time it might be worth trying the search option and reading through these old threads.

68 442 Air Cleaner

Thanks Dean and John.

you mention square hole on drivers side this is for what. I have some that are black , but I think the bases are lower probably for cutlasses or full size models. I will try and look for pictures.

Anyone know were I can get one.

There is no hole on the visible side and the label is correct for '68, so it's a '68.

Here's some pictures of what we've been describing. Sorry, this ones not available as I just picked it up for a 1968 project I'm collecting parts for. John

Yes, that is a '68 unit
Note the ThermAC unit is close to the base or filter. 1969+ it is further down the snout. '68 design requires that black short 90 degree adapter from snout to round hot air tube. There are two types of this adapter, not counting Toronado.

If it says OG and has not an extra added on snout flare at the inlet end, it's a 442/ 98 HC 4-bbl unit. Cutlass snout will have an added-on flare. Easier to spot than snout measuring.

The square hole in the LH side holds the PCV filter, readily available at GM [Chevy uses]. A steel clip holds that to the air cleaner. A short bit of rubber hose connects that to the somewhat hard to find TWO bend steel 5/8" tube to the harder to find 5/8 hole rocker cover grommet.

The two bend PCV tube differs between AC and w/o-AC applications.

Some Part numbers and other info:

6484966
FILTER, PCV System, Mounts in Air Cleaner
1968 Olds V8 + Many years Chevy L6 engines.
AKA AC FB59 FB-59, FleetGuard 1672, Fram CA-19, WIX 42995

Group 1.745 GROMMET
399764
GROMMET, valve cover, "D" for PCV Pipe, hole ~5/8 dia
1968 only Olds V-8, and 1965 Irrigation engines
Accepts PCV Pipe [399766] directly, not the Filter Asm.

90' adapter from snout to round tube, Gr. 3.417
399456
LONG '456 ADAPTER, Exhaust Manifold Hot Air Pipe to Air Cleaner Snout bottom
Funky 90 degree adapter. 3-4 known types. Dyslexics Beware!
68 all V8 w/ AC [exc. Toro or (F85 w/ Hurst H/O)] (per 72 PNM)
68 all V8 w/AC [per 68 Asm. Man.]
This PN believed to be LONGER 10-12" OAL 2-bend unitpictured RS6322
LONGER = "with-AC" type; May be stamped "G" underside
Use with Grommet 401852 at snout [may be embossed "399459 "], soaped for install

399465
SHORT ADAPTER, Manifold Hot Air Pipe to Air Cleaner Snout bottom
Funky 90 degree adapter. 3-4 known types.
This one appears to be the SHORT UNIT
1968 all No-AC, and all with OAI [W30, W31]
68 F85 Hurst H/O w/AC; 68 all V8 Exc. AC or Toro;
69 F85 w/ W31/W30 OAI [Not H/O]; 69 442 4400 w/ TH400 + Perf. Eng.
Use GROMMET # 401852 at snout [may be embossed "399459 "]
SHORTER = "No-AC" and/or "with OAI" [W31, W30, H/O] type
OAI trumps AC vs. No-AC decisions- there's only one OAI snout position.

Gr. 1.762, steel pipe from LH rocker cover to air cleaner's PCV Filter, 1968 only:
399765
PIPE, Tube PCV, Rocker cover to Air Cleaner
1968 only, (V8 all except AC or OAI or Toro)
Runs from RAC grommet up, and FWD to Air Clnr hole 399766 766 X PIPE, PCV Tube, AClnr breather to RACover sm-hole grommet

399766
Apps where A.Clnr's PCV filter is AFT of the RACover grommet. ["Aft with AIR"]
1968 [only], w/ C.A.C or OAI [W30 & W31] ((non-AC differs)) Tube
