64-66 A body tilt column

Hello,
Does anyone have information on rebuilding one of these vintage tilt steering columns? I have purchased one to install in my 65 442 but the tilt area has excessive play. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Never messed with that year but you may be able to fix it yourself. Later columns have four screws buried below the turn signal actuator that sometimes work loose. If you can see down in there, a long screwdriver can sometimes get in there to tighten them up and eliminate the looseness.

yes I guess I'll have to get it apart and go from there.

The hardest thing to deal with in these columns are the springs that pull the steering wheel up when you release the tilt lever. Unlike later 69-72 columns that have a large coil spring at the bottom which pushes up, the earlier columns have two coil springs at the top which pull on the column. I have found the best way to release them is to pry them off of the attaching "hooks" with a small pick.

There is a company in Athens Texas that builds exact replacement tilt columns for A bodies. I do not have a name but you might try a google search. You migh be able to buy parts from them.
