On my 70 442 convertible with A/C I feel like the blower isn't strong enough. I have full voltage (13.6+) running, good grounds, blower relay . I have replaced the motor and cage a couple of times with parts store or Rock Auto units and it blows, just not like you need in Florida with a black convertible top. I guess my question is, am I alone feeling this or has anyone found a solution? I understand there are aftermarket modern systems but I want to keep the car as original as possible.
You’re not alone, but it’s just the way these cars were designed back then. I grew up driving a 1970 Supreme as my first car and never had any issues with the AC, and this was on the Gulf Coast with heat and high humidity. After college I bought later 80s Ford and was completely amazed at the airflow in that system - it moved a LOT more air than the Cutlass.
One thing to do is ensure the under dash duct work is intact and not leaking at any of the connections so you can get as much air as the system can move.
I also discovered that using some sort of seat cover as an insulator from the vinyl seat really helped me feel a lot cooler.
Check out the wiring diagram. Not sure but I think I remember the High speed was on a separate circuit which bypassed the resister used for the lower speeds???. I know some GM's had a separate inline fuse for high speed, might be that...I never thought the high speed was inadequate in my 71 Cutlass, course not as hot/humid up here. Good luck
You are correct, there is a separate feed for the high speed fan - it has an inline 30 Amp fuse in a holder, which is along the firewall behind the distributor area if I remember my '70 Supreme correctly.
