1956 Turn Signal Wiring Question

Hope this is the right section for my question...

Can anybody please tell me which wires attach to this turn signal switch?
I'm not using a stock wiring harness, so I'm kinda dead in the water.
The colors on the switch are:
Yellow
Red
Orange
White
Light Blue
Green

Thanks a lot, Martin

EDIT: Not sure why it shows upside down. Sorry about that.

Here's what I got from my manual.

Yellow = LH turn, front
Red = LH turn & stop, rear
Orange = flasher
White = stop light switch
Light blue = RH turn, front
Green = RH turn & stop, rear

Lets see how well it scanned.

You're welcome fuxl.

Now if you get tired of working on that old pickup, just drop it off in my driveway.

Now the wiring fun begins.

Thanks again, Highwayman!
I finally got to wire the signal today, and everything works!
Can't tell you how happy I am about it.

I did have a problem with the horn though.
When I hook the green wire from the column to the horn switch wire from the harness, the horn is on as soon as I hook up the battery. Kinda annoying.
Is there any part (relay,...) that I'm missing?

There is a horn relay with 3 terminals.

Green from horn button to relay coil.
Red is battery 12V+ to relay coil and contact arm.
Black 12V+ from contact arm to horns. Horns ground at frame.

The horn button in the wheel goes to ground, so off the top I don't know where the horns would get 12V without the relay. Green wire from column should be normally open and go to ground when horn button is pressed.

Alright, I don't have the relay. Guess that's why it won't work.
Do you know if any relay would work, or should I buy from Fusick?

I can't think of any reason why you can't use any 12V horn relay that you can lay your hands on. Have you got any parts cars handy?

Not really. I'll have to buy one at the store.

Here are a couple more pics:

turn signal dashboard lights

I got the turn signals to work on my 56 Super 88, but now both the dashboard turn signal indicators flash at the same time whether on left or on right. I know I saw this problem in here somewhere, but I didn't have the problem then and I can't find the solution now.

Anyone run into this before?

Thanks,
Frank

Frank, with both dash indicators flashing at the same time, what are the turn signals doing outside on all 4 corners? The front turn signals are on the same wire from the column switch as the dash indicators.

Also try the turn signals with the park lights on and see if anything else weird happens.

Highwayman,

The turn signals work correctly with and without the parking lights on. Nothing wierd on the exterior. It's just that both dash indicators flash for turns.

Could it be the switch itself?

Frank,

I don't think the turn signal switch is the problem. There are 6 wires on the switch. 1 is 12V from the brake light switch, 1 is 12V from the flasher and the other 4 go to the 4 corners of the car. The dash indicators simply branch off of the front turn signal wires.

However, and I had to look at this a couple of times, the flasher has 3 lugs. One is 12V Batt, one supplies 12V to the turn signal switch and the third ties to both dash indicators. I don't fully understand what is going on but since it is the only thing I see in common with both dash indicators, try changing the flasher. At least it's relatively inexpensive and easy to do.

I access this site on a daily basis and I very much like to see conclusions to questions asked.

So, I'm putting the Super 88 away for the winter, and never did resolve the issue of the dashboard turn signals both blinking. I've tried two NAPA 550 flashers. Nuttin.
Following Highway's logic, I bought a Tung-Sol NOS P273D on Ebay. IT WORKS.

I think your problem lies in the fact that the horn is always hot but is insulated by a large rubber doughnut (gasket), when the horn ring is tipped it completes the connection and the horn honks. If your gasket has deteriorated or if it has been replaced with the new skinny type now being sold it will honk all the time if the steering wheel nut is set to tight reducing the gaskets insulating properties . You might try as a test to back the steering wheel nut off and see if the problem goes away, did on my car....Tedd
