Welcome. The Cutlass nameplate was first used in the 1961 model year as an upscale version of the F-85. Air conditioning was an available factory option from the very beginning. The Cutlass Supreme model line was first released in the 1966 model year. It was only offered as a four door hardtop in that year (other body styles were available for 1967) and again, A/C was a factory option.

Not to be picky but the Cutlass option was not available till 62. Just F-85 in 61.

Thanks for the reply

I just wanted to make sure the car I am looking for has one. I am looking for from early to mid 80's

On the adds I am looking at I am not seeing anything reference saying anything about the air conditioner.

Can you see my other post for another question. I just want to know how easy is it to fix.

For the most part is it as easy as replacing the compressor?

Nope, sorry. The Cutlass nameplate was first used on a two-door sedan in May 1961 as a mid-year introduction. My original response stands.

EDIT: OK, now that I've gone and searched out your other thread, I know you are asking about a 1980s Supreme. It would have been helpful if you had said that up front in this thread. Ignore what I wrote below and go read my response to your other thread.

People not alive in the 1960s may find this hard to believe, but A/C was a pretty rare option in those years. In 1966, probably only 50% of all cars got A/C, and since that number skewed higher on the luxury cars, lower-end cars like the Cutlass typically were a lower percentage. If the ad doesn't say A/C, the car probably didn't come with it. If not, there are a lot of aftermarket retrofit options available.

If the car does have A/C, repair likely means a new compressor, new O-rings, and a rebuilt suction throttling valve. Personally, I'd install one of the conversion kits that adapts the STV system to a Compressor Cycling system like newer cars. This also entails an R-134 conversion. Few shops today will know how to properly work on an older A/C system like that.

People not alive in the mid 60's also don't realize that 90% of all homes didn't have a/c either.

Or the businesses, stores, movies. As they installed it, it became part of their advertising.

Sorry about that. I had the Cutlass and the convertible mixed up. The convertible was not available till 62.
