is it pinging

Not sure if I tested it correctly but my timing tab comes in tomorrow afternoon but it has to be driven cause dad needs to go to the bank I did it best I could by ear the only noise I hear is what I believe to be my exhaust echoing back since it is right under the cabin which needs to be fixed

Pinging is usually heard under light throttle going up a hill. It will sound like marbles bouncing around in a tin coffee can. Another indication of over advanced timing is the engine cranks erradic and much slower when hot than when cold, feels like its trying to overcome a lot of back pressure.

If your on a hill and witness pinging, decline your timing a tiny bit when you get home. Then when you get your timing tab installed you can set it correctly at that point. Recommended posted timing settings are a guide not gospel. Some engines run better with more and some with less.

Went up to my neighbors as he has flat ground for a transmission gasket and filter change and I heard a rattle but it wasn't metalic or high pitched

You generally won't hear pinging unless engine is under load, like going up a hill or you're holding the brakes and accelerating.

One way I used to set timing back in the day was to powerbrake the car. Hold the brake tight, put it in drive and slowly accelerate. If it is going to ping, you will hear it.

I have found the work "ping" to be somewhat misleading. It's not that high-pitched. Like Eric said, marbles in a tin can. Or even gravel in a can. You'll hear it if it's there. Makes my skin crawl!

X2 here, that's the way I set my timing.
My marks are way out to what my engine likes after distributor curve. The light is of no use in my case, As Eric and Mac said marbles in a can sound will be noticed.
