Sad on every count
Sometimes you will never know what drives people to do things.

They said he left distraught. No matter what the circumstances, sometimes cooler heads have to prevail. I feel bad for his family. Judging by the car, I'm sure they heard what led up to it.

Witnesses said the Oldsmobile turned right off Collins Road onto Route 37, after leaving a party at a home on Roseen Road. One witness described the driver as distraught.
"He came out of the corner... and he started fishtailing,” Holland said. "He lost control, so he crossed the line and he hit the car, and it spun him around."
Something tells me there might have been a little drinking involved.

I'm not. The newer cars are built to absorb energy better. I know the article says 'head on' but also a couple degrees off head on will make a real difference in energy transfer too.
Sad loss of life and victimization. All the folks in this episode are my generation, and it's quite a reality check about the potential hazards of strapping on a car to go somewhere. My condolences to the deceaseds family and prayers for all the victims to recover.

It happened about 1:30PM. Unless one really has issues, not really enough time to tie one on. I read today he had a kidney issue and has, for some reason, been on borrowed time for years. Nobody but the attendees of the party will ever know what triggered the reason he decided to act in a particular manner.
The thing that makes one think is that he is in my generation (alright, a few years younger), had a passion for Olds, and it happened only 2 towns away. I had seen the car on the road and it was a beauty.
When you look not only at the exterior, but also how the dash pushed up and the way the steering wheel was bent, you know he was way over the 30MPH limit in that area.
An update on him.

This video was better than the other thread's. Man, it really puts a tear in my eye to see that car so mangled. I'd be disgusted to find out that it was just an act of careless stupidity... I don't think I'd want to live to see my car like that.

That was a classic muscle car crash. I've done the exact same thing myself a couple of times (I was a slow learner as a teenager
) - come out of a turn, hit it too hard, break the rear wheels loose, and BAM! I was lucky enough to hit inanimate objects when I did it, so just had to go to the junkyard for new front clips, but you used to see these all the time.
It's a darned shame, and seems a bit odd as Mr. Ball was 55, had had his 442 for a long time, and had his sister in the passenger seat, so you wouldn't think he'd be impulsive.
I hope the three who were injured recover well.
