whats the best 4 barrel ? need advice

Hey all,

I have a 69 olds delta 88 with the 455 in it. I have finally managed to get her running after being parked for the past 15 years and have a packrat living under the hood building a nest around the engine. Too my amazement that caused all of the lines, hoes, wires to not dry rot and everything was preserved. I've converted the points system to a new non-points system with a new coil, plugs and wires.

The original 2 barrel carburetor is junk and needs to be replaced so I want to upgrade to a 4 barrel along with a new intake manifold. what are your experiences with different brands, things to look out for, stay away from. Recommendations. Company's to order from everything. Looking to order in the next 48 hours so let me hear it guys!!

You'll get a different response from everybody. It's more of a personal preference kinda item.

I've had the stock Quadrajet, an Edelbrock, and a Holley. Personally, a well tuned Quadrajet would be my favorite. But, I am currently running an Edelbrock.

Thanks for the replies. I have been told the same that its more a personal preference and have read where 7-10 different brands of carbs have been tested and have proven to be within about 5 hp of each other. What size should I be looking at for a 455? 750 CFM? I am not sure how to figure that number out.

It depends on what you want to do. The quadrajet is a semi-complicated carb that will do everything you want it to do rather well. Holley carbs are more performance oriented.

750 cfm is standard qjet. There were bigger ones.

The engine is the original 455, C block with 69,000 miles that came with the 1969 delta 88 that its in. I am wanting to do a street car. Something that will turn heads and show the true muscle of the old American V8's. Willing to take it to the local drag strip and see what it will do but not looking for a drag car. lol It has the factory 2 barrel on it and needs to be replaced. At what point above 750 will I have to look at deeper engine work? I have knowledge about this but not enough on my own.
