Nothing special. Looks like '61 and up 394 had the additional 'hump' on the side of the pan

Nothing like that on my 63/394. Almost seems like someone was trying to get extra capacity beyond the normal 4 quarts. Maybe it's an aftermarket piece?

this started with the 57 371 and I have never seen a definition of its use. The capacity of the pan in the 57 is listed at 5 quarts.

This "can" added about 1/2 quart oil capacity, without changing the depth or the design of the pan.
It also probably helped cool the oil better.

"Back in the day' I remember neophyte mechanics putting an oil filter wrench on this thing and trying to remove it to change the oil filter.

That is the engine unit number. (It has no relation to the VIN )
The numbers started at 001001 so this is the 64,548th engine made that year.
Just before the number should be a prefix letter either an H or J . H= 2 barrel, J= 4 barrel. the engines were painted either red or green. Red was high compression (10.25 to 1) green was low compression (8.75 to 1). There may have been a suffix letter also, none= hi compression, E or L = low compression, S= Starfire.
Your engine would decode to a 2 barrel, high compression engine.

looks like a Gor a 3 ahead of the bolt 065548 after. supposed to be a 61 skyrocket engine. but i never believe sellers. stickers and paint are easy. green 2 bbl motors become red 4bbl motors in about an hour. bought motor and tranny for 350 so i figure i did fair. runs decent compression was very low at first like 45psi left it run in three to five minute bursts over three weeks as to not overheat ( no water) comp rose to 135 respectfully. figure i will install and run on highway and if it dont get to 180 then i will tear it down next winter. right now spendin the dough on the body.( pa car)

I didn't know we were talking about a 61 engine. Info changes.
Prefix letter; F= low compression, G= hi compression,
Suffix letter; none = 4 barrel, H= 88 hi comp option, E= export.
Seller was right 1961 4 barrel 10 to 1 compression. (Skyrocket)

Is a standard oil pan, and it does make getting the oil filter off/on a real pain!
