455 with a 350 turbo
Hey guys need your opinion I have a 1972 cutlass I'm going to put a 455 in it and I have a turbo 400 and a 350 turbo but the 400 is a long shaft and I got to do some mods to make it work. The turbo 350 would bolt rite in with no problem but wanted to no would it hold up ok against the 455 with all that torque ?? Not racing the car it's a 71 455 with g heads!
350 transmission will bolt up to 455 but why would you do that? If you are going to the trouble to install a 455 why not put the correct transmission behind it? I say do the job right once instead of doing it over later and having the car out of commission twice.

hey buddie i run a serious 455 in front of a bullet proof 350 trans and have had 0 problems and i mean serious power plus a overdrive gvod to be exact. I picked up this completely bullet proof 350 trans for a song and dance,My friend who does trannys for a living and his dad for 35 years said that a 350 trans can really hold up very well even stock Time proved this, Detroit really overbuilt these cars for real abuse then like class racing. I say we should reap the benefits and let it roll.
I have a stock 71 G head 455 backed with a stock 72 350 TH. Neither have ever been rebuilt. I put 30k miles on this combination with no problems. Motor has about 180k plus , trans has about 170k. 30k miles of hot rodding with no problems whatsoever. Tired engine and tired trans but no problems. Some say you gain a little power with the lighter trans and smaller torque converter.

I have a 350 behind my 455.When I first put it in it was a little slow at shifting so I took it out and had it rebuild and a shift kit put in it.That was 11 years ago. The car pretty much just races mabe a show every other year.It has run as fast as high 11s but runs consistant 12.0s for that index class and bracket. So you shouldnt have a problem unless the 350 is tired.
John (Jack Troxell) switched to a 350 turbo in this 455 powered 71 Vista Cruiser in the early 70s in Junior Stock competition. Troxell had great success running 12 second records at the time. The wagon was sold to Dick Griffin and named Vista Bruiser and later raced by Paul Mayo for Lubik Olds and then repainted with a rainbow Chesrown Olds scheme. It is unknown if the 350 trans was left in tact for the succeeding racers. The Vista was one off car ordered from the factory with a ram air hood to get the option on the books so it could legally be drag raced in its class. All this done with the help of Oldsmobile's Dale Smith. It paved the way for a rumored 3 Vista Cruisers in 1972 ordered with the W-30 option one of which(brown in color) is owned by George Berejik. The Troxell Vista pictured still exist today. Anyway another example of a 350 trans running hard behind a 455.
