opinions welcome

Ok i have mentioned this before and have a build thread that is on standby at the moment. But what do you think of a rat rod olds. This is a little different than the standard 40's 50' and some 60's rat rods.I have a rusty 67 2dr delmont convertible that the front clip was damaged and all the good parts are off.So now it is just a body and rolling frame with no front clip.I bought the car for parts in the beggining and it is in ruff shape. The quarters are bad etc.SO what I am wondering is what is the opinion of ratrods in here. The car is still a olds but to save it I am doing a rat rod.I have been told to save it and restore it but at this point that would be way to much in the condition it is in.I know it would be worth alot in mint condition. But this car is not even close to mint.I will add the build thread link so you can use it for pics etc.You will see the car has seen better days.

As my son would say - Whatever floats your boat. Nothing wrong with doing a rat rod to keep it alive. Would be kind of neat to see how it develops and turns out. Go for it.

Thumbs up

It looks well past saving to restore, as you said, all the good parts have been taken out - I hope they went to good homes - and you are left with a rolling shell. So if you want to play with it and make your own rod I say good luck and please keep us updated with your project.

I wouldn't put a penny in that car.... not a ratrod fan.

Don't see the sense in spending money in a car to make it look bad when you can spend the same amount in a nicer car.

Just my .02

But.... watever floats ur boat

I like the idea of using later model cars as a rat rod, as long as the vehicle is beyond a restoration. It carrys on the idea of a car guy that can't afford a resto or custom still building a car. Thats where the rat rods came about in the 50s with 1930 and early 40s cars. As long as it doesn't lead to people using cars that can be restored. A friend is toying with doing this to a 57 chebby that was a leftover parts car. It does take a different set of skills to pull it off correctly. I also believe building a car is equal to making a sculpture or a painting, and is a piece of art that does more then just sit there.

So far it looks like most of you are in favor of the idea.Good to hear different points of view.I watch alot of people on youtube and seen the different rat rods they built. So that is part of were the idea came from and the other was a way to save the car from the crusher. This may just be the beginning of ideas and projects that I come up with. Now for another question to add to this.Do any of you have rat rods. You may have hot rods but anyone else have a rat rod or rat rod project.

no skulls crossbones or spiderwebs here not in my plans.I have the vision in my head just need some parts to complete it.I have not put any thought into paint yet and I may have a friend that does body work for a living work with me on that.I have a few things that should be patched or fixed. But I am not going to get carried away with the body.I have seen several say they are building a ratrod and end up with a hotrod. The thing about this one is it still has the convertible top in it.So if I can get that to work I can drive it anytime once it is running.Mine will be uniqe for sure and I have added ideas that will make it all the better.I have two audiences for this project once i get going.I will have classic olds and youtube.

I'm Back and the project may start soon

The update is I have a shop now and that makes it that much closer to getting the attention it needs. I do still need the engine and trans along with a few other parts. I have many projects to do but this one I would like to have driving next year. No new pictures at this time since it is in the same spot as the pictures above.

I have been looking at a 1929 buick radiator and shell and have headlights with signals. I mostly just need the engine and trans. Well that and a black steering wheel or one of the era. Then again one that fits the column in general would be nice. I have one from a chevy beretta on at the moment so I can steer it. I also have a spare bumper for the rear. I haven't decided on a bumper for the front.

Isn't that car a little too new for a rat rod?

Nehh it is a little different and a unique idea to save the car. MY definition of a rat rod was a rusty vehicle pieced together in a creative way. They have been making things with 70's and a few 80's cars. The thing is it will have the old school front to give it the vintage look.

"In most cases...." lets him off the hook.
Anyway, do whatever you see fit to your car. It's yours to do what you like with. If I don't like the finished result I don't have to look at it, rodding isn't my cup of tea, but I can still appreciate the work and effort that has gone into making one.

No doubt using 29 buick driveline would make it a rat rod.

Sort of update

I am still collecting different parts for this car. But as it does life slowed this one back to a crawl. I got a grill shell for a brockway truck say 30,s to 50s. I have to test fit to see if I like or not. I figure if I don't like it will make nice wall art. I have a friend that may be buying my white 4dr that is in some of my postings. The part that my be good in that is I still have my 455 and th400 trans I bought from a 69 olds 98 for this project I can use. Still need to figure out a radiator. Need a older rounded one sort of the 20s 30s rounded. May have to do some searching. Seems a lot of these have to be bought online. Maby thinking 4 core not sure what to go with.
