I have seen in photos of other peoples cars 64-67 style, a nice plastic/fiberglass fan shroud that looks like it would work way better than the metal ring that is on my car. I've seen it in several different photos so I'm guessing it's some aftermarket piece or maybe people are converting a shroud from some other car. Anyone have a clue as to the origin of these shrouds I'm seeing??

64-67 Cutlass down flow radiator.

 

Shrouds came mostly on A/C cars in that period. Non-A/C "A"- body cars came without a fan shroud? My 67 factory W30 car didnt come with a shroud. I got one from a Cutass that had a 330 with A/C!

 

The plastic shroud was available on the A/C equipped 442's made in Lansing only. California cars were not made with them.

Not correct! Plastic fan shrouds were for ALL A/C cars - NOT just 442's! Like i said earlier --- 330 A/C Cutlass' had them! Not sure if the statement about Lansing only and Calif cars is true or not? All I know is that my factory 67 Cutlass Supreme 330 A/C car had shroud on it from factory!!

 

I don't know about other years.... I bought a 67 CS about 5 years ago, it didn't have A/C but did have a smog pump and it had the plastic shroud. That car had a lot of rust and I bought another 67 CS about a year later. It's in the garage, it didn't have a shroud when I bought it but it does have the two lower mounting tabs so I assume it came with one. This car doesn't have A/C either. Both cars were built in CA and were 330's. All of the 67 radiator top plates I've seen were drilled, or rather punched for the shroud.

If you want to adapt a 67 shroud to an earlier car I think you would need the two lower mounting tabs, the plastic shroud and a 67 top plate (or drill your's). I think there are reproductions of the shroud, but not sure.

My 66 Cutlass has A/C and no shroud. 330ci with a clutch fan and idles at 197*

 

I'm in no way an expert with 1964-67 vintage cars, but I believe we have a difference being missed. I believe, and you guys can confirm or correct this thought, that 1964-65 have the tanks on the top and bottom. That 1966-67 are a side flow with the tanks on the sides. I've not measured them but the side flow radiators in my 1967's looks larger than the top flow radiator on the 1965. Depending on the climate and time of year a shroud may be more important in some parts of the country. I haven't got my 1965 project car driving yet but my 1970 had real problems with stop and go traffic when the temp was pushing 100 degrees. I put in a 4 row radiator and a shroud with the clutch fan. That made a big difference.

Then the comment about what did or did not come with shrouds may also be a difference between the 64-65 vintage and 66-67 cars. I believe 442Bro is talking about the 1965 model when he said only the AC equipped 442's built in Lansing had the shroud. Hopefully this cleared things up some... if not please correct what I said and we'll go from there!

Thanks for the info John, but I don't think I can get my butt cheeks spread that wide. I've been doing some research and it looks to me like there are several "heaven forbid" Chevelle ones that will do the job. Only a devoted Olds freak would know the difference by looking and I don't care.

 

My 64 88 with factory A/C does not have a shroud. For safety more then anything I would want one. Something simple as reaching into the engine compartment to check carb function while engine is running can be an accident ready to happen......not to mention the hood latch poaking you in the head while you examine the engine OOOUCH!!

 

That's odd, my 1964 88 does. Of course, it's the metal one that looks like a section of sewer pipe with some tabs welded on it, but it gets the job done.

 

When you add a shroud to a 71 cutlass that didn't come factory with one is there brackets that have to be attached to the bottom? I got a replacement one from Fusick, also a cluch fan since I got stuck in traffic and had my gauge reading 240 degrees with the 4 bladded factory fan. Or could I run the cluth fan without a shroud for a while till I get something to attach the bottom of the shroud to?

 

Where do you get the brackets?

 

I don't have the brackets or if I knew what they look like I can fabricate. I didn't see anything listed in Fusick, or the Parts Place.

I have been looking at pictures from car shows and investigating other photos and have not seen one 63/64 88 with a fan shroud. Any ideas how I can find an example so I can fabricate one myself?

 

Jeff, I don't mean to hi-jack your thread but wanted to answer a couple questions posted here

dhoff & Tucsonbob, here' a couple pictures of the 1970-72 tabs that the lower shroud bolts to. This core support is rusty, as are the tabs. But if you guys each wanted one with enough metal around it to help you fabricate new ones and weld them in the right location... contact me.

navvet, I recently looked at a 1965 jetstar and that year had something similar to a 55 gallon drum slice with corrigations in it. I don't know if that was the same as 63-64 or not. John

I just got done installing a 66 Chevelle big block shroud in my 65 it fit real well only had to build some simple brackets to hold it in place.

 

1965 dynamic 88 shroud needed. Where do I find one and what other cars can I adapt one from?
