Chrome Trim Removal

Stainless Trim Removal
I would like a little advice on how to remove some chrome trim from my 72 Cutlass.
I want to remove the top chrome piece in the attached picture. How does it come off? Does it slide down, or pull straight off? Or???
Change the thread title.

First of all, it is not chrome.
It is stainless steel.
That part is the drip edge molding. It snaps on the body edge.
Take an old fashioned bottle cap opener (the kind with a pointed end and rounded end). Wrap some electrical tape around the round end, and SLOWLY pry the molding from the bottom edge and work your way down.'
Again, go SLOWLY until it comes off.
Also, get yourself a Fisher Body Manual for your car. It shows how to remove all the moldings - and some are really tricky.

My442, you are right, it is stainless steel.
Bluevista, the drip edge molding is there, but it is painted red.
The piece I want to take off is the piece on top of the rear window. I think it needs to come off to get the vertical piece on.

The FB book is vague on removing that piece as I answered over on OP last night.
64, prior to 1966 each Division had its own body service manual. You need the 5-volume set of 1964 Oldsmobile service manuals. Or if all you want is the Body section, sometimes you'll find singletons on ebay. That will be Volume 5 Frame/Bumpers/Chassis Sheetmetal/Body.

the top stainless is held on with screws, you need to remove the window channel and there are four screws holdind the piece on. post cars are tough to get particular parts for, you should just have those cleaned up

Thanks a lot 1001coins. I am not replacing the top piece.
The vertical one, on the front side of the window was missing when I got the car. I found one, and now want to install it.
It looks like I have to take the top one off, to slide the vertical one on. Unless it can be installed without taking the top one off?
