How much for my 72 455 BB?

How much should I ask for my motor? It is from what i can tell a 72. The heads were swapped out for Ga heads. I was told it ran great before being pulled. I just dont want to go this route for my car. So im selling it. The only things that are wrong that I know of, are that two of the tranny mounts have to be retapped (stripped bolts)
Thanks!!

What do you mean swapped out for GA heads? Those are the heads that come on a 72 455.

Are talking about the bolt holes where the trans bellhousing bolt up?

I'd say $250-$300 as a core.

I think Randy is right on the money. $300 would be a reasonable price especially if the engine is complete from the air cleaner to the oil pan. I bought a complete 455 and TH 400 transmission for $300. It was a steal!

Yes, where the trans bellhousing meets up.
I was thinking it would be worth around 500. Heads alone are worth what, 150?

500 hundred would be on the high side of what it is worth. For a running engine it would be a fair price. For a complete engine that needs to be rebuilt a little high.

Yeah, $500 seems a bit high. Maybe if it has some aftermarket parts (intake or carb).

If it is a "complete" engine, all brackets, pulleys, yada-yada, you may get $500. The small stuff, brackets & pulleys add value. These engines are getting scarce. If someone is local and doesn't have to pay shipping that is decent price. I sold a running engine to Calif. and the shipping was around $400 an the guy was glad to get it. Hold your price for awhile, you can always go lower later or Ebay it. Good luck, Ken

I guess its a toss up since i dont know FOR SURE if it runs.
It does come with ever bracket and all that good stuff.

Is there a way to check for wear without tearing it completely apart? like if i take off the oil pan and check out stuff under there?

You can take off the oil pan to check the bearing wear. You can also do a compression test on it. A person buying an engine will only take that info as being your word. Not as proof. Unless someone can here the engine run then your word that it runs is that your word.

Selling a engine that you have never heard run. It would be best to sell it as a complete core.

Take a prybar using the transmission dowel to turn the flexplate. If it's not locked up thats a plus. Anyone buying it should take it apart for inspection and at least an "old-style" rebuild. That's a--"if everything looks good, (hone-rings & bearing, valve-job)"-- thier call on how far they want to go depending on thier plan for this engine. If they are planning on racing, thier going to do a full machining anyhow. Hold your price, these engines aren't like Chevy's. My Chevy buddies always laughed at me because back in the day I was always dragging old Oldsmobile out of the fields for thier engines. I use to say "hey, they quit making my stuff (Olds 425/455) a long time ago. I can go to K-mart to buy stuff for yours." (Chevy stuff) Every buddy wants a big block engine in thier Cutlass (442, SX, Hurst) when they putt to the car show. Whats a $100 or two more when your getting a complete (core)engine with brackets and pulleys. I've had at least a dozen guys in the last 5 years call me trying to find brackets for incomplete engines the bought. I could write pages on this, (if I was a better typier.) Good luck, Ken
