i am told that you can cut the frame out of a steel hood and glue it to the fiberglass of an OAI hood that had the frame rusted out. is this true? it looks like it would work. i have a 1970 flat hood that has zero rust on it. i was saving it to use the frame if i ever needed it to fix an OAI hood if need be. i was thinking about selling it but for no more than i can get for it i am thinking i will just keep it for this reason. what did the factory use to glue them together?

 

I think the issue you may run into the the frames are different due to the large hole for the air box. It might look good with it closed, but it wouldn't be functional.

 

Eric, if you still have the OAI hood on your Rallye, you could compare it to the hood you have...if they match up, you're good there! Although separating the glass skin from the steel skeleton might be risky! Could do more damage than good!there are plenty of products that you could glue with. 3M and Fusor make some good panel bond adhesives....look it up on the net!

 

Somebody here or on one of the other Olds forums was talking about taking their OAI hood to Thorntons and having the skin seperated from the frame.
It was either to re-glue it or put a new steel frame on?

That panel glue woud probably do the trick like Erik said, and he knows, about that stuff anyway.

I would use Liquid Nails myself.

i was going to compare it to the rallye but the hood is behind a days worth work to get it out. i think the area for the air breather is open on the steel hood. the one thing i am also wondering is the spot for the hood pins. i will just have to look at them.

 

I buy it by the case, in the big caulking gun tubes.

At work you actually only use duct tape for ducts.
Also works well for wounds, the tinners's hands are covered with the stuff on bad days, auto body guys should all have a roll handy.

 

Actually, you are close....we use masking tape! We call it "Bodyman's Band-Aid". And if you get stitches, don't bother coming back to work! Real bodymen don't do stitches!

 

we use electrical tape.

 

I started on a project like this years ago. I still have both the rusty frame and steel hood frame, plus the badly cracked Rallye 350 fiberglass. I thought the primary difference was where the hood pins fit, it looked like heat and using a press could create the space for the pins.

But... I know a while back there's another thread discussing this and I believe Joe said there were other differences that would cause problems. If you haven't done a search on the subject it might be worth a try. John

 

i have tried the search method on other subjects, i don't think i know what i am doing with it because i never find anything with it.

 

I have a steel hood in the garage. I can go down and snap some pics of the underside and then open my hood to give you an idea of the difference.

Yes, the two metal frames are not identical. It's been a while since I looked at this, but there's a formed section on the frame for the steel hood that is formed one way and the opposite way on the O.A.I. hood frame. I don't remember it this prevents using the metal hood frame on a 'glass skin, but it will not be "correct".
