W30 Aluminum manifold plug correctness

W30 Aluminum manifold plug correctness

W30 intake plug correctness.

Does anyone know if this hex head brass plug is correct for a 70 aluminum intake or is the square plug type correct? This is for applications that don’t use the three port gizmo,

All 70 W-30 had the 3 port temp/vacuum valve so that plug has to be wrong.
Edit, I am not aware how the California emissions setup works but I think it uses the 3 port valve also...

Use an headless brass or aluminum plug with internal hex.

In 70 assembly manual the three port switch is conspicuously absent on the w30 engine vacuum page

Also in the 1970 PIM:

Near the bottom, right corner look at the four squares at the intersection of parts 103880 and 1230500 with product codes TT and TS (W-30 Auto and SM).

It shows no vacuum switch and a plug in the hole.

Elsewhere in the PIM, the plug shows as having a square head.

Now I see you have a 4 speed I hope you don’t mind a couple of questions. Under hood of car I just bought is a mess, I’ve done a few Olds but this is first 4 speed. Are the plastic straps that hold the positive battery cable to the valve cover white of black? I see both. It looks like one attaches to the air cleaner spring clip? Where does second one go? Are there only 2?

The black straps are available from Inline Tube. You will need a minimum of 3 straps. ILT sells on ebay here:

I’ve attached several pictures that are self explainatory with regards to the placement of the straps on the driver’s side. There are actually 3 clips involved on the driver side, the most discreet one is located where the positive battery cable curves around the valve cover at the firewall end of the engine and loops through the barrel insulator going to the starter, the remaining two clips are attached to bolt 2 and 3 of the driver side valve cover. On the passenger side there is one black strap attached to a clip held by a valve cover bolt as shown in diagram PIM Sec 8 pg 132.

I'll concur that the square head plugs are correct, not the hex head.

Similar to the Muncie plug with the square head.

@tnswt Did your W-30 have headers at one point in its life?

Jimmy, I can only assume so, as evidence of the casualty you noted. In my particular case, I made no replacement, but display the historical scar to bear witness as to how decisions made by past stewards of the car influence its condition today.

Makes perfect sense to me. I am in the same boat with my red inners.
