Yes, or they would not have put one on. Also I use a little gasket sealer.

I had to replace the gasket on my 403 in the T/A. The original was copper but I replaced it with a FelPro fiber gasket. It works fine. I don't know why they originally used a metal gasket.

Cheap. Effective. Reusable.

They also used metal head gaskets.

Is it necessary to have a METAL gasket? No, but a gasket? Yes. Be sparing with sealer in that area, use just and only enough to thinly coat the gasket.

And neither the head gaskets nor the oil filter adapter gasket (nor the metal intake gasket) were ever intended to be reusable. Each of these uses a formed bead around the openings in the sealing surfaces. The bead deforms when the parts are torqued to take up any machining tolerances or unevenness. Once the bead is deformed, reuse is not a great idea. Yeah, I realize that solid copper head gaskets can be reused. That is not what we are talking about here.
