I saw this pic from WThirty1's post on the resto of his '70, and noticed the bottom portion of the trunk mat overlaps the upper portion.
Is this correct, or does the upper portion overlap the lower portion? (Or does it matter?) Also, does the straight edge of the upper portion go towards the rear seat or does the curved edge?
Ok, my dillema is I would like to have the upper portion fit all the way against the back of the rear seat so none of the trunk floor is exposed, but it doesn't seem to work out that way.
Additionally, it's likely whatever piece(s) you purchase might require "some" artistic input on your part esp. where the bottom aligns/matches to the trunk lock & wire loom brackets on the rearward edge of trunk deck including where the jack and jack handle mount. Be an artist.

I've already done that Norm...lol. Just wish I could get a better fit up top.
I've seen all types - some great some really bad. I've seen nice trunk covering(s)/mat(s) made from many materials - rubber, neoprene, cloth of many varieties e.g. Walmart, Becks sheets, blankets & the like, etc., etc., etc. Find something you like.

I like the one I have...it's a repop of the factory original. Looks exactly like the one in WTHIRTY1'S pic.
So my bad this is a pic of a 19,000 mile survivor I used to own and the trunk was untouched so looks like the bottom overlaps the top
I hope this helps everyone

Well now...that just throws a wrench in the gears...lol. Does anyone know if it's detailed in any of the manuals?
Based on my 442 which is pretty original (but not 19K original!) it has the flat edge going across the back seat and the curved edge towards the bumper.
Was the trim ring attached to the spare from the factory? I bought my 71 Cutlass when it was only a year old and it didn’t have a trim ring on the spare.

The trim ring was installed by the dealer when new it was on the bill of sale.
The material that the reproductions are made of is not even close to the original material and they don't look or feel the same. So if the flap goes above or under is really a moot point.
I agree, if you're replacing it, it's a moot point. My '72 has less than 48,00 miles and I'm the third owner. There was what appears to be glue on the floor of the trunk but not the original mat and I bought a repro off a vender. Since it was a repro mat, I installed it as I thought it should be and as I liked it. My cars is not being restored to concours and will not be judged for originality so it really doesn't matter. my car has a lot of original items but it's not factory original......that only happens once. It's restored to how I would have driven it in 1973 if I could have afforded it. It is what it is!
I believe I had it right in the picture but not sure how much thought I put in to it TBH. I based it off the glue pattern and pictures of a few survivor cars.
I prefer the top overlapping the bottom, but would like to have the top portion closer to the back seat with no trunk floor showing....that's my main objective.
Why did we have to go through this exercise if you already knew how you wanted it to be? This kind of stupidity is why I rarely EVER help out in the general forums, I help plenty of people on here who are seriously trying to do things factory correct. I do not like wasting my time and this was a huge waste of my time.

Um...who was that comment directed towards?, because it was totally uncalled for.

Dave
It was directed at you. I responded to your question and provided pictures of how the factory did it like you asked in the original post but if you weren't going to do it that way why did you bother asking? While agree the reproduction mats are not very good they still look better than nothing and will fit close to the way they came when the car was new.
I am sorry I even responded and I WON'T do it again to anyone.
I like the look in all the pics. It's better than the trunk in my 64 98. It had bits of cardboard and cloth that were all mangled.
@Oldsguy and I found a rubber Oldsmobile trunk mat in the salvage yard when I was younger. He installed it in his 69 Delta 88. It was black molded rubber like a floor mat and was designed to go over the mats pictured above. I'm not sure what kind of Oldsmobile we found it in, but it was in pretty good shape.
Rubber is not recommended, especially in a humid climate. Big condensation/moisture trap. Where I live, in the Pacific Northwest, I've peeled back original factory rubber mats in old cars to reveal gaping holes in trunk floors.
Wow...such animosity. Yes, originally my intent was to be "factory correct", but the more I thought about it, the more I decided that I prefer the top overlapping the bottom. My intent was not to cause such an uproar, and if I upset anyone, I apologize.

You posted pictures along with your replies. Pictures are valuable information. Count me among those that appreciate your efforts.

-- Seriously, I get it also, Dave your were asking what guys thought, Fred you were well intentioned and put time into the thread. I understand both... I think one main part of these sites are for entertainment- not only information. So, just like a conversation you have with some neighbors over dinner subjects- they flow all over. BUT Fred, I do understand also. Every once in a while I find a question or comment about a subject that is exactly what I went thru in the past,- and boy,- would my information help this guy,- and others... So I hunt and peck for a half hour or so. And no response- no thanks- no disagreement- no kiss my a$$,-no nuthin... So I usually just follow a thread- someone else can do it.
--I thank both you guys and all the others who contribute to this site. makes my morning reading over coffee entertaining and informing.
Discussing the placement of a trunk mat is a legitimate topic of discussion for our website and worth points to concours restorations. No trolling, please.

Appreciate your time and effort here Fred. Always good to learn something new.
