1965 Starfire Convertible at my favorite used car lot

Spotted this this morning at the same little place where I bought my '73 Delta 88 convertible two years ago.

Like before, the place wasn't open when I stopped by, so I don't know what his plans are for it. He might have bought it himself with plans to fix it up and resell it, or just resell it. Or someone bought it and had it brought to him to make any needed repairs.

This photo was not taken by me but rather I found at the Mecum website, where the car was sold at the Kissimmee auction in 2021 for $14,300.

Googling the car's VIN turns up its most recent sale, the 48th Anniversary Collector Cars and Pedal Car Auction held on February 1 in Valparaiso, Indiana.

Whoever bought it got it for $8,750, considerably less than what was paid for it at Mecum in 2021. That's a little weird, but who knows.

In the photo above showing the vehicle info sheet in the car's window, the mileage is listed as 44,402. Interestingly, the Mecum listing shows a photo of the car's odometer, and the mileage is exactly the same. It apparently hasn't been driven an inch since 2021. Presumably it runs as they would likely have said it doesn't run in the listing. They just say it has a "strong" motor.

More weirdness.

I do agree with one thing it says in the windshield info sheet---you really just rarely see 1965 Starfire convertibles. That was the last year for a Starfire convertible. The '66 Starfire, the last year before the name was reused on a subcompact in the mid-70s, was available only as a two-door hardtop.

Only 2,236 Starfire convertibles were made for 1965. Production of the coupe that year was 13,024.

I like the knock-off better than the current wheels. He should put the knock-offs back on with some tall tires like it had originally.

Did you get a look at the "custom interior"? Just wondering how bad it is.

I agree, but who knows if they're still with the car.

No, I didn't, but there is one photo, of the back seat, in the Mecum auction listing. Not awful.

I did find one more instance of the car being offered for sale, this time at Country Classic Cars in Staunton, Illinois about a year ago. The car does get around. Florida, Illinois, Indiana, now Michigan.

In Illinois they were asking a whopping $27,900. Same mileage. How do they move the car without the odometer changing?

Note that it says "44,402 mi TMU." TMU is used car speak for "True Mileage Unknown." I'm guessing the odometer is broken, and the mileage could be anything. We know it's at least 44,402!

The interior is tastefully done. I had the interior of my 71 98 done similarly.

I went by there again today, and I took the opportunity to take more photos of not just this car but the other beauties on the lot. Again, the place was closed, but the cars are wide open and easy to get to. I wasn't the only one stopping by to view this impromtu car show.

Several of the cars were bought at the recent Mecum Kissimmee auction, some for pretty good money, and yet they're just sitting there with no security, open to the elements, and, like me, anyone can walk up to them. Most of them aren't even locked, so you can open the doors, open the hood, no one is around to stop you. I know this is a small town and all, but you'd think there would be some attempt to protect the cars. Whatever.

I have to believe the owner here purchases these to flip them. Perhaps he fixes up anything that might be wrong with them.

The '65 Starfire was open, so I took a few photos of the interior. Doesn't look too bad. The car has air-conditioning, which is pretty cool for a mid-60s car that is also a convertible. Also has power windows. Still has the original radio, but apparently it is disconnected because there is an aftermarket radio in a custom console on the transmission hump. The car does have a floor shifter, and some aftermarket gauges were added. Odometer still shows 44,402.

1964 Plymouth Fury Convertible, sold for $15,950 at Mecum Kissimmee.

1955 Buick Super sold for $25,300 at Mecum. Gorgeous car.

1966 Imperial Crown hardtop sold for $13,200

1975 Pontiac Trans Am sold for $19,800.

1975 Cadillac Eldorado convertible sold for $9,350. Seems low to me for a car like this. I wonder what's wrong with it.

More from the car lot.

1971 Chevrolet C20 Cheyenne pickup. Sold for $11,550 at the Mecum Fall Special last October.

Late '40s? Buick convertible. Sold at Mecum, but no info sheet in the window. Stunning car, just sitting there collecting snow.

Mustang convertible. Not sure of the year.

1964 Chevy Impala

1960 Cadillac, still with Oregon license plates.

1970-ish? Mustang. It looks like it has a year-of-manufacture plate on it, but I didn't look at it.

Dodge Ram pickup with camper. Only 59,000 miles. I can't tell the year on these. 1980s?

Finally, right in front of the building is this red Corvette, just like the song says. Again, I don't know the year. These all look the same to me.

This must me one safe neighborhood. Some really nice cars. The Corvette is a 70-72 because it is a 454 with chrome front bumpers.
