Tip for pulling ‘70 442 dash?

Going to tackle the dash removal next week. When I removed the dash in my W-31, I took every little component out on its own, and I think that probably wasn’t the best way. What are the pro tips for pulling the entire dash out with most everything attached? Radio is out, front speaker is out, gauges are out.

I have had the dash out of my 69 a couple times, it sucks. Best advice I can offer, get the factory service manual. Basically, disconnect the fuse box from the firewall, disconnect the cables from the heater control box, disconnect the speedo cable, disconnect the wiring connections from the dash harness to firewall mounted items (neutral/reverse switch, kickdown switch on the gas pedal, parking brake switch, etc) lower the steering column, and remove the dash as a complete assembly.

I seem to recall a couple posts from a few years back detailing how to go about that. Maybe 8 nuts on the backside, electrical connections and heater control cables. I've only ever done it piece by piece as well but never had to reassemble which struck me as being a heck of a job if it meant the reverse of what I'd just been through.

Even though it’s probably not in the manual, I’d suggest removing the seats, and laying down some thick cardboard or a heavy blanket on the floor. The seat mounting studs will shred your back.

Have an assortment of extensions and swivel sockets, and plan on spending lots of time on your back. Have a helper to remove or reinstall the dash. I put lots of layers of masking tape on the painted surface of the dash to protect the paint from chips/scratches from the hose box/heater cables.

Good luck.

70 Cutlass Dash Removal

Getting the dash out isn't all that bad, but the metal frame can be sharp and will cut your hand & fingers. Also, the main electrical harness to the fuse panel is attached to the back side of the dash and was installed as a unit: fuse block, harness & dash. Most attaching points are 8-32 castle-nuts along the top & bottom, but there is one point that uses a special "press-on" clip which will require a bit of brute force to release it. Don't lose this clip as they are not reproduced in the aftermarket. Here's a pic from the assemble manual which should be helpful.
