Closed the gate last night and the strut froze up apparently and snapped off the top ball for the entire door. Anybody know of a fix short of finding an entire door assembly? It’s the welded on bracket that GM made sure is not serviceable.

 

Go to a body shop, they should be able to weld it up for a half hour of shop time.

 

Yea, I hit up a dealership body shop and due to the stress point, they said it would fail.

 

Post a picture. You might want to find a regular welding shop.

A professional welder would be able to fix it, without worrying about repeated stress failure.

 

I’m gonna get a second opinion. I need to retire so I can go back to trade school. 😁

 

That body shop did not want to be on the hook for it not holding.

 

Here is the tit and fracture.

 

I'd get someone to take off the bracket, one spot weld is visible, weld the tit in, slap a strap across the back, weld that down, then tack in the fixed bracket, test fit, fix, then burn it in.

 

There are 3 welds but yes. I’m going to check with another shop to see what they say. Other than the hassle, I didn’t expect it to be super hard.

 

A good welder should be able to repair that.
