Put it in park. Help convince it it is in park by grabbing the rotating collar, if it's a floor shifter, on the steering column and rotating left till it stops. Did it get stuck in the off position or the running position and you had to turn the engine off creatively?

If it's a floor shifter make sure the backlink Is operating and adjusted correctly.

There is also a rod going to the ignition switch that something may be interfering with it moving properly.
Did you try pushing the key and key collar in towards the column while turning it off?

Is the backdrive linkage from the trans to the steering column in place? The collar on the steering column must be rotated fully counterclockwise for the key to rotate to the LOCK position.

Mine did the same thing a few weeks ago. I had to disassemble the steering wheel and pull the lock cylinder. Key would not turn in the cylinder. I wasn't worried about authenticity so Autozone had a new cylinder with key in stock.
