This car has a six cylinder motor, 34k and seems to be pretty solid. We have changed the oil and a few other things, usually runs great. However, a couple of times at stop lights it just dies, it will start back up after a try or two. It has done it a few times now and did it today while driving. It belongs to what I would call my "adopted son". Great kid saved for it himself, but isn't cash heavy. Any opinions as to what might be causing it? No CEL coming on. Thanks much

 

If it has the double, sandwiched battery cables on the positive side, make sure the connections are clean and apply dielectric grease. I had an 89 Bonneville with the same problem, and that's what it was after a barrage of parts cannon ballistics.

You can have the ignition coils tested at your local auto parts store. Either on the car, or removed.

It could be fuel related. Next time it dies pop the hood and depress the schraeder valve on the fuel line near the fuel pressure regulator. It should squirt fuel. If it doesn't, move the key to OFF and then back to RUN. You should hear the fuel pump run. Then you should have pressure at the schraeder valve.

 

You need to start with a full code scan for sure.

Check the PCV valve. If it runs ok until you let it idle and then stalls, a bad PCV valve can introduce a massive air leak below the carb/throttle blade and starve the engine for fuel.

 

Let us know what happens Beemer. He PM'd me and mentioned the car is getting coils and a tune up.
