Does this bumper jack work on a 1970 442? Is it the same jack as came with the car?

The jack would work, but I'm unsure about the cradles. I need one as well, but it'll have to wait.

 

I agree with Randy. Finding something other than a 1970 or maybe 70-72 Cutlass/442 cradle that fits against the bumper correctly sounds doubtful to me. For actual use I like the hydraulic bottle jacks with a couple blocks of wood. But if you want the original look I can understand having the correct bumper jack. I may have one but expect that it will have rust on it. If your willing to do some restoration work I can dig around to see what I come up with. Randy, I could look for you too if your interested. Over the years I've dismantled several 70-72 Cutlass's. John

 

No, the Chevelle one won't fit properly. You can't afford to have your car partly supported when jacking. The Olds bumper jacks were not (as far as Ive ever seen) interchangeable.

The jack for the Buick looks really close, but its not the right one either. Not to mention that its missing the rubber pad you need to protect the bumper.

It's too late tonight, so maybe tomorrow I can get a picture from my car. I believe the 1970 jack will be the same as for 1971/72.

 

Allen if you could post a picture of the correct one that would be great! In my incredibly unorganized pile of clutter there must be several old jacks but the only thing I could do is hold the cradle up against the bumper to see how well it lines up! John

I'd be very interested if you have a jack for me. And I absolutely wouldn't mind restoring one.......in fact it sounds like a fun project.

I have a scissor jack for actual use, but want the bumper jack as part of my on-going restoration.

 

I would never use a bumper jack on my car .

Well Pat I've passed over a couple parts cars this summer as I really need to get a handle on my "collection" But boy was that hard!!! I keep telling my friends that it's just a hobby, I could quit at any time, yes, really I could, I just don't want to

Find an original if you want to have it in your trunk but buy yourself a nice bottle jack or better yet a floor jack. Yes I know they take up more space but are infinitely more safe to use. I have one in every Oldsmobile I own regardless of how large they are. I don't want my car falling on me when I jack it up to change a spare.

 

I took a picture of the Jack hook so you can see what it looks like. If you need pics of the rest of the jack LMK. This is the original jack from my car. It's been used a time or two, but it still looks presentable for a 37 year old piece.

Thanks Allan. This helps a lot. Like I said I only want the right jack for historic reasons. I keep a scissor jack in trunk for actual on the road fixes and I have a 3 ton floor jack with 2 jack stands for working on it at home.

 

Pretty much the same as me. Except for taking it out to snap these pics, I don't think it has been out of the car for over 20 years. I'm thinking of leaving it just the way it is. It could be cleaned up to look like new I suppose, but I think I'd rather keep it original, it's not in bad shape. The jack is still shows as galvanized metal and has its original jack handle sleeve. I notice that a lot of times when people "restore" these jacks, they paint the jack stand silver. That's a mistake on these cars. Anyway I hope you find the jack you're looking for.

2blu442, if you can sort out your jacks and stuff, these go for a pretty penny on the market.

 

you and me both on the scissor jack though that is also due to the fact my car did not come with a jack.The missing jack will be remidied very soon as I bought one and have a few things to iron out and I will have a bunch of parts for my project and a few spare pieces.I have a small floor jack in a case in my suv it has came in handy.though I might buy another bottle jack for different projects at home.I have one that came in a bag but somthing is wrong with it.did you get jiped as my car had no jack no tire iron or spare.

 

For several years now I have been using the full size '80's Olds rear drive jack which fits into the large hole in the frame (behind the front tire and ahead of the rear tire) the large **** on the jack lift keeps it from slipping...it looks like a horizontal bumper jack, but it lifts on the frame and the regular jack only goes to the shows...

 

Totally agree here , bumper jacks are not good to use partly cause they can cause minor damage but also cause they are dangerous. They should be neatly tucked away in the trunk and left there. I use floor jacks ( I have 4 - 2 & 1/2 ton) and 6 - 2 ton jack stands. i have used all of them when I had all 4 tires off , the floor jacks would be enough but I use jack stands as a backup plan.

 

Just found this on ebay, needs some cleaning up, but its the right one for you. Price is not bad.
