Bumper Jack for 1970 442
Bumper Jack for 1970 442
Does anyone have for sale a bumper jack for a 1970 442 (convertible).
Does anyone know if any Chevy, Buick or other GM bumper jack is the same as the Olds jack of that year?

I posted this over a year ago. In that time I got hold of 2 pristine jacks. They have slightly different markings, but each fits the bumper. One day I may find which is absolutely correct....but for now not certain. Consensus on one of them runs fairly high, but still some folks think the other one is the right one.
I'm pretty sure the jacks are the same throughout the Cutlass line-up. The last '70 442 I had used the same jack as my '69 W31. The "hook" for the bumper wasn't exactly the same but I think the "base" and "stick" were. I might have a spare laying around--I can match up the "hook" from my '72 Cutlass S and my '69 W31 and see if they are different; I'm almost positive they differ. That item should be easily obtained either here or another Olds site or as a last reort ebay. I see them quite often on ebay and prices are usually not unrealistic.
As far as I know, the bases and the ratchet bars are the same throughout the GM line over a fairly long number of years (though I expect someone will chime in with some piece of esoteric information about invisible markings, or variations if the gloss level of the paint), but there are at least two different types of ratcheting mechanisms.
One has an integral hook and opposing rubber bumper (and Dave Stillman alludes to possible variations within this group), and fits into a vertical slot in the bumper, if the car has one.
The other has a receiving socket for the horizontal shaft of a larger, pivoting, hook, which is contoured to wrap around the outside of the bumpers of the car it is made for, and which, if I recall, is stamped with a fairly explicit description of that car.
I have no idea what Bob's car is supposed to have, as my '70 Cutlass had long ago lost its jack...

In 1970 (Cutlass and 442) the hook or "lift" as Olds called it, has the number 406925 on it. The ratcheting mechanism has a date code on the rivet (ie 0B for Feb 1970). The mast is gold cadmium plated(4 sided but not square) and the base has U70 marked on it. The hook, ratchet, and base are painted federal gray in 1970. Other years had two other style masts, T shaped and more of a squared shape, as well the 1970 style shape. If you only are concerned about functionality, any 1968 to 1972 Cutlass/442 jack set up will work. (That is if you do not mind the bumper being pushed into the fender and the car being very precariously lifted in the air!) Lifts from other A bodies will have a different shape to correspond to the bumper shape.
i have 1 that i had sand blasted i was going 2 paint/restore it, i should of left it alone it looked good b4 i messed with it, its my original 70 convert sx jack I THINK!! it came with the car and the guy i got it from said it was original, you can have it if you want just pay shipping it has alot of surface rust from sittn without paint but will look good again with a little work, let me know

I knew there was more to it than I knew.

Wow.....looks like a Frankenstein yard of car parts....I don't think from what I saw in the pics that I need anything there, but if I have the time and energy it might be an interesting Sat trip.....thanks....will let u know.
It looks like a fun auction. Wish I could be there! Lots of lots to check out! Love the crate engines or should I say engines in crates?
They do seem to have a lot of boat anchors as well.
