Anybody ever come across a fuel pump that leaks around the bottom area? This is a new Delphi pump about 4 months old that we kept smelling gas fumes & I got to checking around & saw a small drip on the floor under the fuel pump. It would always evaporate pretty fast why I never noticed it before. I checked all the fittings & hose connections & the top of the pump was dry but the bottom half was wet & dripped a drop about every 10 seconds. I just took it off & will be replacing it with another Delphi pump tonight. Hope it was just a fluke thing & not a common Delphi problem.

 

Just curious if you happen to know the year and model car &/or engine size?

 

I have a Carter on my '71 350 cid. Make sure you have it torqued down correctly. Put a straight-edge both to the pump and the engine to ensure they're flat. Sometimes I notice they come with two gaskets, mine only had one. Is your pump a three line or two line pumper?

It’s not leakin oil from between pump & engine , it’s leakin gas.

 

The diaphragm in your pump has a leak, and it is running out of the vent hole on the bottom side of the pump (the top-side of the diaphragm is what pumps the fuel, the bottom side has to breathe through the vent hole). This is a common failure mode.

 

Yeah, I was just curious because the pump is only 4 months old , still looks new. New one going on tonight as soon as I get home from work.

 

I had two fail in the way JohnnyB mentioned. I think it is hit and miss on the replacements. I used to think the Carter's were ok, but then I saw some posts here having issues with them.

 

Well, I just put a new NAPA fuel pump on it & started it up & let it run for a few minutes & shut it off & looked closely & everything was nice & dry.

 

I just did some reading of the fine print on the NAPA box.
This is actually a Carter fuel pump & is listed for $33.00 on line & on the store computer ,for some reason the salesman must have been in a good mood & sold it to me for $22.00
My old one was only 4 months old & was a Delphi. but I didnt buy it , the previous owner did & I didnt pester him to return it since a new one was so cheap.

 

Might want to change the oil. If it was leaking fuel out the vent, then the diaphragm has a leak. It can leak into the engine just as easily as leaking out. At the minimum, pull the dipstick and smell the oil.

I had a mechanical fuel pump that pumped fuel into the crankcase. It did it so fast the oil dipstick would read high after a short drive in town. As I recall, it was a new parts store fuel pump too.🤔
