Rocket motor upgrades

Hello, I recently purchased a 70 cutlass with a rocket 350 in it. I知 looking to squeeze some more power out of it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I知 trying to keep the cost as low as possible lol.

Start with a fresh tune up and recurve your distributor, maybe add an open element air cleaner. Good for some cheap ponies.

Good advice. If it doesn't have duel exhaust that would be one of the first things I would do after the tuneup. If it has a 2 barrel carb then an upgrade to a 4 barrel would be a big improvement.

If you do upgrade to a four barrel carb, do not listen to anyone spouting for a Hollie or an Edelbrock. Stick with a well tuned Q-jet.

Do a compression test first to determine the engine condition. If compression is good replace the timing chain and both gears. Squeezing extra power out on a worn chain and gears might cause a lot of damage to the engine.

You may be able to view the chain and gears by removing the fuel pump and looking into the cavity with a USB phone borescope.

Good luck!!!

Busting a timing chain was pretty common on higher mileage Olds 70-72 cars (likely all years) back in the day when you ran them hard. At least, it was for me.
