Texas Tragedy

Folks please pray for the families and the first responders in this horrific tragedy. There is no way to comprehend this. Please do not get political on this but just pray for them. The first responders lives are changed forever. They will never be able to unsee what they have seen and will be scared forever. I cannot imagine the tragedy for these families. Horrific does not begin to describe this. God Bless All of Them.

I am just sick and deeply saddened by this horrific incident. I have 4 grandchildren and can't even begin to imagine how I'd feel if this happened to one of them. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected.

This country is so damn desensitized to violence. How many movies tv shows whatever are full of violence murder rape etc. I am beyond pissed at all of these pointless shootings. Cowards. 🤬
154 days into the year. 212 mass shootings. Americans killing Americans. Great look.

Sad reality is that it will Never happen. Ever. Gun freaks are deep. There will Never be any kind of gun control in America. Nowhere else in the world do you see this. Not on this scale. Nothing but a video game.

How about teaching people to give a crap about each other.

More American tragedy.

Back in medieval times it was common to cut the head off a killer's corpse in belief that desecrating it kept the spirit from returning to do more murder. Maybe time to revisit that? Might send a message at the very least, but messages unfortunately have little effect on sociopaths.

Instead of enacting more useless feel-good restrictions, how about enforcing what's already there? And making sure nutcases/sociopaths don't have access?

Never in 65 years have I seen a weapon fire itself. Someone has to pull the trigger.

That was our first response in our family--prayer.

After that we took time to discuss the continued silence about the single factor behind more than 90% of senseless shootings--legally-prescribed anti-depression drugs.

There are non-drug alternatives that do not have these side-effects but this silence does not allow us to make better decisions.

As a former first responder, thank you Glenn and others for your kind words and understanding. I was only a police officer for 3 years, but the kinds of horrors I witnessed were terrible yet nothing like what those in Uvalde are experiencing. I cannot imagine what they are going through.

Without getting political, as a former law enforcement officer, a responsible gun owner, and a proud American citizen, I find it beyond disappointing that our "winner takes all" party strategies have handcuffed us as a nation that no longer seems to be able to work together and compromise in order to solve some of the hard issues we are facing today such as this kind of gun violence. All I know is that more inaction, more "thoughts and prayers," isn't going to change anything.

Pretty much this. Looking at pictures of this guy, it is obvious he had mental problems. I have no issue with people with mental problems not being allowed to own guns. For instance, on the NICS form, it says, do you take illegal drugs, and lying is a felony. This could be changed to "do you take illegal drugs, or any drugs for mental illness (and then list them). This would make anyone trying to buy a gun while on these drugs a felon and illegal to have guns ever again.

However, the REALLY interesting thing is that he could not have afforded one of the rifles he used, so thinking he "bought" them legally is ridiculous. This thing glows.

Prayer is absolutely definitely the best for those of us that cannot offer physical help in addition to prayer.

Just curious Randy, what positive steps do you suggest our government take?

I do agree. I am going to say this without being political, No 18yr old kid should be able to purchase a gun especially since he cant buy a beer or cigarettes until 21. That is a little backwards to me. That shooting of those kids yesterday really bothered me, some people just don"t have regard for human life. I grew up in the late 60's early 70's and I cant remember this stuff happening. Kids don't need to be slaughtered when they go to school.

Hmm, well, you asked for it.....
Assault style weapons ban. If you want or need one, join up. If you need to hunt with one, you are a shitty hunter
Nationwide repurchase program to get assault weapons off the streets (yes we would all pay for it, but wouldn't it be nice for kids to be able to go to school and not have to do active shooter drills- or DIE??)
Universal background checks for all gun purchases, 21 year old minimum age to purchase. All private sales must be reported.
Ban on ghost guns.
No Open Carry anywhere. Why do you need to carry a Glock to the f'ing grocery store.
Permit only concealed carry.
Ability to sue gun manufacturers
You can google this - We have the highest per capita gun owenership in the world. We have the highest gun related homicide rate in the world. Most countries do not even allow private citizens to own guns. I'm not saying we shouldn't own guns, but we have the miltary to fight our wars, and armed law enforcement to get after the bad guys. If all the good guys being armed would stifle crime, why do we have the highest crime rate in the world? Not buying it.

I'm sure there are many more, these are just off the top of my head. Now, let me also say, that I am a veteran and have carried and fired an M-16. I own weapons. Colorado is an open carry state but I don't carry. Many of you probably belong to the NRA - which used to be a fine organization - all they want now is to forbid ANY legislation of any sort regarding their beloved GUNS and to lie to everyone about why guns are good.
End of rant - let the flaming begin.......

We need a solution that 100% of our citizens can support. Dividing us in two will not solve anything.

How about we just make our schools as secure as our government buildings and airports. One door in past a security guard. Use a metal detector if you want. Put cameras on all exit doors with a signal notifying the office when the door opens to allow someone in..

We have millions allocated of unspent COVID relief dollars budgeted for school upgrades. BTW these funds expire in 2024. How about we just spend the money to secure our school buildings. It isn't that complicated folks. Lets solve the problem instead of continuing the gun control debate.

Looks like the kid in Texas just walked in a side door to the building. How is that even possible in today's environment?

But, what do you do about a 15 year old, in obvious mental crisis for months(without treatment), whose parents buy him an "early" Christmas present. A semi auto 9 mm handgun(and extra magazines), and took him to a gun range so he could learn to shoot it. Nov 30,2021 Ethan Crumbly used that gun to kill 4, and wound 7 at his Highschool. When his parents found out what he did, they fled to avoid arrest and prosecution. They are caught 2 days later hiding in a Art studio 30 miles from home.

I volunteered for the Military in Sept 1971. I spent 10yrs with 2 tours in Nam. I could not buy a gun at 18 before I went into the Military. So to answer your question sir, I was an 18yr old fighting for this country.

^^^THIS^^^
I was on some of these drugs for a time, when I broke my neck dirt-biking. The same family of drug is used to lessen/alleviate neuropathic pain. That SCHITT put me in a TAILSPIN. For the entire duration, I was depressed and could hardly see to get out of bed - "what was the point?" I stopped taking them against my doctor's advice, cold turkey. What a trip the withdrawals were! About three weeks later I was back in my right mind. THAT is the main reason for this crap!

I can understand people's concern over the side effects of some anti-depressants, but its not going to solve this problem. Go thru the list I posted, and see which were on "Meds". The last 3 shooters werent. The Columbine kids werent.

Thank you for your service to our country Gary. My point was if we are to take away weapons from all 18 year olds should we also take them away from 18 year olds defending out country? That does not make logical sense.

Randy;

1. Please give your definition of "assault weapon" without naming a manufacturer make or model.

2. None of the things you've listed describe the Ulvalde shooter: he got his weapon legally which means he had a background check and all the rest of it. How would any of the law changes you suggest have prevented this (and many others like it) shooting?

3. Do you think the 2nd amendment should be changed?

I agree, something is amiss. The kid worked at Burger King yet had the funds to purchase one rifle (around $1800 starting price, I think), a second unidentified rifle, plus a bunch of gear. How could he do that on BK wages?

I agree, if we continue to split into "US" vs "THEM" we will never get anything accomplished, on this or any other issue.

Nice straw man. We can have another debate over how he got the cash to buy the gun, and that's fine. But the real issue here is weather he obtained the gun legally. He did.

There is no way we should take/prohibit weapons from 18yr olds in the Military. I hold them to a complete different standard than 18yr old civilians.

Would this fall under the united we stand and divided we fall?

Suing gun manufacturers makes as much sense as suing Alcohol and Automobile manufacturers when THEIR products are misused.

I blame participation trophies. Bjtches don't know how to deal with rejection, failure, defeat, or losing in general. No! It's not always okay. Life is hard. No one is always going to be there to pick you up. Mf'ers are flat soft, and can't deal.

yes. This is truth. The mention of video game culture/mindset is also noted. I grew up in the 70s, and this was not a thing we had to deal with. I don't believe the gun laws were more restrictive then. No politics, but I think we need to look deeper into the systemic cause of this madness, and in this case the word systemic is certainly appropriate.

Columbine shooter Harris was on Luvox.

And your reply brings up two other good points...
* The drug connection usually does not come out until a few years after the violence
* Some of the drug connections are now being suppressed by being labeled as misinformation

The conclusion is not that knowing this is a 100% solution. But we need to recognize this, discuss it, and possibly ban anti-depressants that have violence as a side effect.

Randy;

IMO, an assault style weapon is typified by the sytle associated with an AK-47, or AR-15/M-16 capable of shooting multiples of round per minute even in manual fire mode with a high capacity mag.
Yes, the Ulvalde shooter is not your typical murderer, but he is in the minority. Since we cannot see inside a persons mind, we have no way of knowing if they are riding too close to the edge. If he didn't have easy access to, and/or possession of an assault weapon, there most likely would not have been as much carnage. I don't think he oculd have stabbed and killed that many people in the amount of time he had.
As for the 2nd ammendment, I think it needs updating and clarification. The definition of a 'well regulated militia' needs to be spelled out clearly and concisely. What weapons a person may own should also be spelled out. There is no way the founders could have forseen what havoc their writing would allow in the future. (There was an assault weapons ban at one time, and gun related homicides decreased during that time, and increased sharply when it was not renewed)

As much as I would like to see conversation on this tragedy, this is not the site to do it on. We now return to our normally scheduled car focused program. Thread closed
