No response to a PM

I'm fairly new to this forum for Olds advice. I am trying to find a repair shop in the North Florida/Jacksonville area that knows how to build Olds motors. I sent a PM to cutlassefi
roughly two weeks ago with no response Very disappointing. I was trying to see if he could recommend anyone in my area. I figured since he is in the same state and he has years of experience with Olds motors that he could offer some advice. Through some online searching I found a couple of shops in the area with good reviews, but only one has responded.
After talking to someone at the shop explaining what I am looking to do with my car and finding out more about their experience with Olds products. They do everything but paint and body.
I was told that they do have a very good machine shop that they work with. I was told that it would be 30-60 days before they could get my car in. When they do start the rebuild on my
motor and I find out the condition of my block and heads etc. with their recommendations. I will be sure to contact the forum to validate their recommendations.

If I sent a PM to a CO member and didn't receive a response, I would try again before I got too worked up about it. People get busy; things fall through the cracks. Why don't you try Mark again ... or you could ping him, like this:

@cutlassefi

1. Are you looking for a repair shop ? Are you looking for a shop to build an engine for you ?
2. I would consider Cutlassefi to be in your area if you want a high performance/custom built engine.

^--- This pretty well says it all. To test this theory, ask your wife or girlfriend for names of local chicks you can "poke". Tell me how that works out.

I understand that Mark is a busy guy. And for all of you guys that say I should get real and just blow it off. I say that two weeks is plenty of time for him to at least have the courtesy to say something! F off or whatever. And if he's worried about someone at least 3 hours away from him taking his business, that's pretty screwed up in my book. I thought that Oldsmobile people were more thoughtful and willing to help fellow Olds owners. Some of the responses I have gotten sound like Dodge owners.

Do you have a Facebook account, if so, I would reach out to Mark Remmel (cutlassefi) on that platform. Early spring and summer are the busy times for engine builders, especially performance builders.

I think Mark mentioned this place for Olds engine machine work..
https://power-engines.com/performanc...cksonville-fl/
If you call them, ask if they have a Olds BHJ block fixture, if they do they are probably a decent shop.

Don't sweat the delay in response. I try over and over. If someone answered PM's I would have already had a 70 442 at my door. Keep asking. You will get help. There are a lot of Florida people here.

Mark must have mentioned this place before I became a member of CO
Thank you for the info. I will definitely ask about the BHJ fixture.
I have not attemted to contact Mark thru Facebook. I do not use any form of social media.

Recommend you call up his business like a man who does business, if you want to do business with him. Getting advice is not business. Successful businesses screen customers, as well. If you sound like you don't have your stuff together, and all you want is advice; yeah, you're not going to get a response. This forum is not a club; he doesn't know you from Adam, so I would not expect counter-to-business-sense favors.

I know Mark is a businessman and I would love to have him build my motor, but being that we are at least 3 hours apart; unfortunately that is not going to happen. Sorry but I did not think of
this forum as a business connection, but I can see how that can happen. My impression is that CO is a place for members with years of knowledge of Oldsmobiles to pass that on to other
Oldsmobile owners that need assistance.

I haven't looked very hard as I send my work out.
But a friend uses Mark Hedrick for all his Olds work.
He's of course kinda hard to get ahold of...but very good.
I believe he's on Normandy(rt. 228) out by cecil

Toymobile...where was your shop?
I wish I could get some Jacksonville folk to meet up together.

That's not always the case. A lot depends on personal relationships, whether someone is a business or a hobbyist, your standing in the group, etc. It's more of a meeting place for people with a common interest than a club where there's an obligation to help new people. Your questions can improve their chances of being answered if you ask the group, in the right forum, a question that shows you did your homework. A general discussion thread about Local Jacksonville, FL machine shops that is something like:

"Hey guys, I have found these machine shops in the Jacksonville area. (List 1, 2, 3 with websites). I called them and like the first one, and the second one I couldn't reach, and the third one was a rude jerk. Does anyone local have experience with any of these shops and could recommend one or any others I missed? I want to do [X, Y, and Z] to my engine, which is a [XXX] displacement out of a [YEAR] [OLDSMOBILE PRODUCT] with this many miles, and my goals are [STREET/STRIP/HOONIGANING]. I found these past threads on here on this subject [link, link, link]"

This will show you've done homework and aren't a flake.

I like dumpster fires.
This thread is becoming one.
Scratch that, it started out as one, and it is continuing.

Since this question comes up occasionally, I created a sticky on how to do it.

Oldcutlass, put down your coffee cup before reading. Geeeeeze, then if you ignore people, you'll always get the answer you want to hear......thus validating "stupid".

There are probably not too many people on here that remember Norm. Norm passed on several years ago. He was the only person that I ever blocked. He was a real jack wagon. Just impossible. I hope he is resting in peace.

well, i can tell you that i spoke to mark on the phone, he agreed to help me with some basic info on building my engine, then blew me off for a couple of weeks. so i sent him a text that simply said "thanks", he then sends me a text telling me that he hadn't forgot about me, i'll get it tonight, then it was tomorrow. well, i still have no info from mark, that was april 8th. if he is a builder, and had the parts i needed for my build, or could source them, i would have purchased through him to support his business, i never expect anything for free. my time in my business is worth 100 bucks an hour minimum, i would have been more than happy to pay him that for lining out what to do with my build. if he was too busy and didn't really want to fool with it, he should have just said so, i am a grown man at the ripe ole age of 48. i've owned my own business majority of my adult life, if i don't want to do something, i simply tell them that upfront. i truly hope the guy is just busy and said the hell with it, but don't tell someone that you're going to do something, and not do it. he may have helped some in here, but i wouldn't be so quick to send people to mark right now, he obviously don't have time. which is awesome if you're self employed.

p.s.
with that said, i would never start a thread about not returning a private message, not everyone gets on the internet every day.

I think a lot of business owners don't like to tell any prospective customers "no". I fell victim to this phobia myself when I ran my own business, and the end result was too many promises to too many people = some inevitably slipping through the cracks. The solution?

Learn to say "No!" It's much easier on everyone in the long run.

exactly. i finally learned how and it has made my life easier. some people don't like me for it, but they get over it, and my business is still going strong.
