Anybody know what the difference is between a 68-70 two line fuel sending unit and a 71-72 two line unit? Both are 3/8 supply and 1/4 return. Book shows 2 different part numbers. Using an aftermarket tank and I figured senders would be the same?
Update: purchased 2 others off Amazon for a comparison of 70-72 sending units. From left to right: Dorman 692-244 (71-72), Dorman 692-242 (68-70), OPGI 68-70 unit PZ00734 and the one that came out of the tank which is an AC unit. All 3 repros are SS and nearly identical with the exception of the side the float arm is on. All 3 have lines that point slightly to the passenger side once installed. The original one the lines pointed straight back. The sock does not have the same tapered grommet where it slips onto the tube. The one off the repros looked to be glued on somehow? Also note that the original one had a pickup tube depth of 6.25” and the 3 repros have a depth of only 5.5”. The tank I am measuring from has a depth of 7”.

Reason: Added information.
There were actually three different fuel senders made. There was 68/69, 70, and 71/72.
The 68/69 unit p/n was consolidated to the 1970 number. There was a physical in the two and the difference was in the arm for the float.
The 71/72 has the float On the opposite side, and the float was yellow in color instead of black. I believe the float may have been a different material.
Yes, Joe P told me about the 3 different part numbers just the other day. I’m surprised the aftermarket hasn’t consolidated them all into a single 68-72 part? I’m kinda disappointed in the increased height of the pickup and the way the sock is fastened to the tube with loctite or something.
I pulled the NOS senders that I have. The first number is for 71/72 Cutlass/ 442 with fuel return. You can see the part number, date on the box etc. This sending unit measures 6 1/2 inch’s down. There are no casting numbers or part numbers on the units. The units are clearly marked AC made USA. Your measurements may differ from mine as I did not remove the “fuel sock/ filter”.
The second unit I measure is the original part number for 68 -70, then, they had 1970 part number only, then, it was consolidated to the 1970 p/n. This sender measured 6 inches and the inlet pipe is straight back. View the pictures and you can see the difference in a side-by-side picture.
