I have a 71 cutlass what is the quickest way to tell if you need a one or two line sending unit

How many lines are on the passenger side of the frame? If two (one fuel line and one evap line) you have a single line sending unit. If three on the frame (one fuel, one evap, and one fuel return) then you have a two line sending unit.
