Fresh air cables

The passenger side fresh air vent on my 55 doesn’t work. The cable won’t pull out more than 1/2 inch or so even when it’s disconnected from the air box. The lever on the air box moves freely. I think the cable is simply too short to open the vent fully anyway. It looks like the cable end may been broken at some time in the past and it’ll never be long enough to move the baffle to the full open position. There is no slack in the cable itself to help make it longer. I’ve seen a video about lubricating the cable but when I removed the control unit from under the dash (no easy job, by the way), it appears to be a sealed unit so there’s not much of a possibility to lube it. Can the passenger side cable be replaced without buying the whole (left and right) control assembly?
