GAS SUCKER!

Well, last weekend I got plates and insurance on the Cutty and drove it all over the place showing her off. I got alot of looks and alot of comments (which made me feel good!). I didn't really pay much attention to fuel consumption. This past week I drove the Cutty to work. Everyone at work Loved it. Anyway, Sunday night I packed it plum full of gas. At 0'dark 30 Monday morning I'm on my way to work....listening to nothing but AM talk radio (ZZZZZzzzz!). I did my usual thing all week. Back and forth to work. On Thursday when I got off at noon I headed home and noted that the fuel needle was on E so I stopped and got gas. It was then that I realized that I had burnt through 22 gallons of gas in this girl! The Crazy thing is that when I drive my '04 Dodge Hemi all week back and forth I usually burn a little over a 1/4 tank. The SCARY thing is that both the Dodge and the Cutty both have 22 gallon gas tanks. WOW! I think some tuning is in order! Either that or the Cutty just sucks that much gas! Guess I will have to re-think dropping a 455 in the Cutty!

Did you know the distance to work to figure what you are getting for mileage?
Is the engine a 350 4bbl? AC? Could possibly be carb and tuning issues.

Something doesn't add up.
Presuming Cutlass gas tank is no smaller than your Dodge, and figuring it to be the same, your hemi would be getting 48 mpg if your Cutlass got 12 mpg. I doubt you Cutlass mpg is any worse than that even with a bad tune-up.

My 74 with a 350th350 and road gears got upper teens. I am thinking that girl needs some help someplace, or she is set up for the track or something.

Sorry these old classics were not made for gas mileage high teens is as good as it gets most times. Hard to compare new cars with old, lot of innovations and improvements in 30 plus years of auto engineering. A lot has to do with stop and go driving and distance how many miles are you getting to a tank ?

the best I ever got out of any of my 3 pigs was 15.5 on the road in the Toronado to Bowling Green, before ethanol

I get gas in the wagon every other day ($10 - $15) just to avoid the shock (denial???)

You need to find a route that is downhill most of the way.

Make sure it is downhill both ways! The last 70 cutlass I had, in good tune still only got about 14mpg.

I've broken down 3 times because of huge Gas Swallowing and a once in a while functioning sending unit.(which is getting replaced this summer). My line everytime is..this thing can't be out of Gas I just filled it up! All I know is this Car Loves High Octane Gasoline!

How heavy was your right foot then??
On the highway, my 72 with a 350 gets 19 or so. Combined city & hwy i get maybe 14 to 16. I don't fret - lots of style, torque, and fun comes with that price tag.

I wont' even check my MPG, with the 455 and all the mods that have been done I know its in the toilet, but I didn't build it for a daily driver but rather a fun cruiser. I want to mash the gas and send the chebby's running for cover not to see if I can go further on a tank of gas. Enjoy your car, in a generator or two we won't even be allowed to drive them I'm thinking.
