Can anyone tell me what the purpose of the spring loaded linkage is for? It provides little additional movement.
(I know the picture is upside down and I rotated it right side up and saved it before I uploaded but it was unfixed when it displayed here.)

I took this off my parts car and the carb linkage rod was attached to the ball on the movable linkage.
On the installed switch that is in the car the linkage rod was turned end for end and the ball end was at the carb and the right angle end of the rod was attached to the bottom hole in the picture.

Almost certainly for switch-pitch torque converter. Your service manual will have all the details. I ripped one somewhat like it off my Toronado when I went to an electronics box to control the converter. Mine was a dual-unit--one switch for the kickdown, one for the torque converter.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear, I know the switch is for the switch pitch converter. What I was wondering about is the spring loaded pivot piece with the ball connector riveted to the arm behind the spring. The pivoting part has very limited movement. It seems like an unnecessary complication but its there so engineers thought it was needed. I was wondering what for...

I found nothing about it in the manual. I have found the throttle rod connected to the movable piece and directly to the long arm on the switch.

I think its there so you don't hyper extend the throttle linkage and assures passing gear engagement.
