Thornton hood

Has anyone ordered a Thornton hood and it came in this color primer? I’m interested in buying if this is what he says it is. It has the steel/metal bottom.

Mine was that color but that one has had the bottom painted. Mine wasn't finished like that.
The cheaper fiberglass over steel hood on the market is riveted together. If this is bonded its most likely a thorntons, even though I thought they only sold them with the screen installed

It’s not riveted and it has a screen look closely.

Of course I can't be sure from pics but it does look about the same as mine.
Even the box looks the same with the exception of some slightly different fragile stickers.

This is what mine looked like when I got it from Thornton. The box from what I remember is similar but mine came with a screen bonded on the underside.

that's the weirdest color top primer I've ever seen. But the bottom of the hood looks spot on. It has the screen and there's evidence of the bonding adhesive on some of the structure. I wouldn't let primer color be the deciding factor. You might want to ask if the hood has had any minor cosmetic repairs to the top and then resprayed? If the price is good I'd certainly take the chance.

This one has a screen you have to zoom in.

Congrats! Now you just need to get all the hardware and breather that goes with it. Best of all you don't need to change out your factory hood springs!

YES. The very early Thornton Hoods (pre 2001) were this color before the went to the white hoods. A friend of mine purchased his hood then.

Yes but since then he has had to have new mold made, the molds do wear out. These molds are not cheap.
I think the old mold was made from wood, the new mold is steel I believe.
When I ordered mine,I had to wait for the new mold to be completed. I think my hood is from the first dozen made from the new mold.

Actually there's a whole web page devoted to Troys new OAI hoods and their construction. The old mold was actually made from an OEM hood, not wood.

IDK, Fusick claims they are in stock and ready for shipping. $2495.00 + shipping of 250-300 truck freight

Does Fusick sell Thornton hoods or their own? Lisa Thornton the other day told me they are not taking any orders and are 6 months out again

Fusick does not have any 70 model year Thornton hoods in stock. I got he last one. I tried to buy one direct from Thornton about 6 weeks or so ago and was told, directly by them, that their mold had been damaged (did not say how) and would have to be rebuilt. They are completely out of stock for at least 6 months and probably longer. BTW, the new price will be $2995.

I purchased mine before the 2001 Olds Nationals in Denver, I'm pretty sure the price was $1050. Although that was with a pickup at the show negating shipping. It was delivered without primer, just white gel coat. Troy was great to work with. It sat on top of my car in the garage for a couple of years and then I talked with Troy again in Lansing. He mentioned that they had done some perfecting of the process and it would be better to have the newer version. A couple of months after getting home, a friend in Austin was doing a high end restoration on a documented car gave me a call. He had ordered a new hood from Thornton but it was back ordered for like six months and needed the hood immediately to meet a delivery goal. He asked me if he had the hood delivered to my house if he could drive up and use my hood. Obviously this was a win/win situation. He drove up, swiped it out of my garage while I was at work and five months later a new, improved and primer grey version showed up on my porch. The reciept shows $1149 in 2003.

Does the OAI hood use the spring mounted on the core support like the steel hood? I just got my Thorton hood, and it looks great, probably the last batch as I waited a while, ordered it in March, got it in August, Troy had to get new SMC material to make the batch.

Yes the Thornton hood uses all the factory parts, core support spring, hood hinge springs and even the center main latch and safety catch.

Thanks for confirming that, I was concerned with the spring leaving a mark on that pretty new inside steel area at the front of the hood. I will try to get a picture next time at the shop.

The the spring is going to scratch the paint, the safety latch will scratch the paint also, guaranteed.
I would much rather have a hood that functions properly, with some small wear marks on the bottom side, then to have a hood that might possibly fly open at highway speeds. A hood that flies open can cost you thousands in repairs.
