About every six months, someone "discovers" this photo and posts it.

A big "What if" for Olds. Even more extreme than the Buick Srage 3 stage pieces out there but both are nearly no existent.

Anytime this engine surfaces it's good.

Shut a Chevelle guy up quickly last night when he was yapping about LS7 and how it's extraordinary horsepower output kept it out of production vehicles. I said yeah, the same thing happened with the Hemi-Olds- 550 horsepower was more than the insurance companies and govmink were willing to tolerate. Chevy guy says no such animal ever existed, and a kid with a smartphone pulled it up and stunned the guy.

Joe, sorry we didn't find you at Fall Carlisle.

That picture was at the R.E. Olds museum. It was on display for quite some time. IIRC it was not there last summer?

I always found it interesting that the manifold for the Olds Hemi had a provision for a divorced choke yet wasn't used, at least in that picture.
Anyone venture to explain why or have any insight into this?

I think you are reading waaay too much into a display motor that may or may not represent what the engineers actually planned to do. Is that even the "correct" carb for the motor, or just something bolted up for display purposes? FYI, Chevy used divorced chokes well into the 1970s.

Interesting how the ran the heat risers. Also, frame that the engine is in has bias plies yet the car behind, maybe an 88 has radials?

The museum put that display together, not the factory.

There’s a steam powered Grand Prix at the heritage center but it’s Pontiac so I won’t get into that, lol there is a corner of the back area full of engines on stands, I don’t remember if and Olds motors were there.
ill never forget walking the GM booth at the Texas State Fair, it’s the firest show of the season, and Olds was gone. A buddy used to be a set up Man for Olds at Stubbs, i wish I would have snagged some show plates. I snagged a few Pontiac things from Stubbs before it closed. I never thought to ask if any Olds stuff was still laying around. I heard the Ghost Pontiac was still in the whse at Stubbs when it closed.
( HB Stubbs had the GM auto show account for years, Creative Services was just Chevy, GM had that. They did close it at one point. )

They probably "borrowed" that idea from the Mopar hemi.

Pontiac had hemis also. You gotta remember, the hemis and even the Cobras were not selling. They converted some super birds noses back just to sell. What no one wanted then is now rare.

Well- they WERE a bit bizarre styling-wise, and they WERE expensive, so no one bought.

Story is the Hemi-Olds was ready to go into the 1970 Toronado and then into the 71 442 until Corvette brass pitched a fit and brought a halt to it. I've heard several Olds factory people relate that story so I have to assume there's some truth to it. Then when the 1971 emissions standards took effect there was really not much point in further development. Emissions killed off the Chrysler Hemi about the same time. A very powerful and efficient design but they had trouble meeting emissions with carburetors.

I wonder why no one makes this as a crate engine.

The head molds were on Ebay and suddenly gone. It all adds to the mystery along with what could have and should have been.
