I’m going to replace the original hood insulation on my 67 Cutlass. There are 5 clips to hold the insulation, my question is do I also use any type of adhesive to help hold the insulation? I did not remove the original insulation yet. Any help from your experience would be appreciated. Thanks

 

I replaced the hood insulation on my 67 Vista Cruiser a couple of months ago. I did use some glue in the middle and rear corners. I used 3M spray upholstery glue.

 

I've replaced the hood insulation on both my '67 Delta 88 and '78 Toronado.

In the case of the Toro, there were enough clips (14, which admittedly is a lot more than five) so that adhesive was not needed.

The Delta, on the other hand, also uses only 5 clips. Here's a photo of it after installation. I did use adhesive, but, like I said, only here and there. You can see a little hangdown on the driver side, but it's minimal, so I didn't put any adhesive there.









The problem with using adhesive is that it makes it difficult to remove the pad down the road if that ever becomes necessary as it all comes off in little pieces. Of course, you hope that, once the pad is replaced on your car, you'll never have to do it again in the time you own it, so getting it off again is not really an issue.

BUT, what if the pad gets dirty or soiled and you want to replace it? I've seen a radiator hose give way and spray the engine compartment, including the hood pad, with coolant. Yes, it'll dry out, but the pad will never look the same, and you would want to replace it.

What I would do is mount the pad using only the clips and see how it looks. If adhesive is needed to hold up a corner here or an edge there, use it sparingly.

 

That is how I did mine, it only had 5 clips so I added the adhesive only where it was needed.
