Reverse lights staying on in park

My reverse lights are staying on in park also in Reverse. But in neutral or drive it doesn't come on. I have a 1972 old 442 with a automatic floor shifter a th400 tranny and a 455 engine. Any input would be appreciated.

Your neutral safety/backup light switch is out of adjustment.

Or the backdrive bushings are shot and the collar isn't rotating back all the way.
Are you having issues rotating the lock cylinder back to the lock position?

That's what I was thinking. As a test, while in park grab the collar and move it manually to see if the lights go out.

Basic question: Is this a factory floor shift car or a conversion?

neutral safety switch

I am doing a conversion from column to console shift on a 1971 Supreme. I am swapping out the column to a column for consoles, that also includes the neutral safety switch. On 1971's they put that switch on the column regardless of whether it is floor or column shift, but wondering what advice or traps to be concerned about ? I want it to still work as designed (backup lights etc).

Thanks

Reuse your old column shift linkage as the backdrive linkage with the new column. Get the correct trans lever, which is available repro and has provisions for both the cable attachment from the floor shifter and the backdrive linkage to the column. You will likely need to adjust both the backdrive linkage and the NSS per the procedure in the Chassis Service Manual once it's all together, but this is a bolt-in process.
