Has anyone cleaned up and refurbished their original sill plates? The ones on my 66 are in good shape just/oxidized obviously after 40+ years. Whats tips or tricks do you guys have? Wet sanding won't get down into the ribs to even out the appearance compared to edges.

 

What about a small buffing wheel on a die grinder or drill?

 

The problem will be to get the original texture/finish which is not a high polish such as would probably result from a buffing process. I have some good used and some NOS ones, BTW.

 

A fine scotch brite pad will bring it up nicely. You'll go through a few pads in the ribs. Then buff with the pad Oldcutlass pictured.

I'm not worried about the correct finish as this car is nothing valuable so if I can get a polished look that will be fine.

 

Fine-grade steel wool would work well for this task, and it comes in various grades from coarse #3 to extra-fine #0000.

 

I know little about a 66 but on a 55 you can remove the sill and have it buffed by a trim shop.I'm sure that the finish could be restored by a decent operator... Tedd

 

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I'll get to work on them before I head out of town again for work and can get some decent results.
