Why the difference???

Why the difference???

As I was under my car removing undercoating, I realized one rear wheel well was very different from the other.
For the life of me I cant figure out why the drivers side has such a deep pocket.
Was this used for something?
Was it a wagon hold over?

That's where the filler neck is on the wagons.

I was hoping you'd see this.
It was driving me crazy...plus scraping undercoating out of that cavity was nasty.

Unless this was a holdover from the Gen 1 wagons, the Gen 2 and 2a (1968 to 1972) didn't have a filler neck--just an opening directly into the tank.
